jason the filter freak February 7, 2007 February 7, 2007 I'm having the same problem I had last time... my clumps of cheato I picked up at the last meeting are just shrinking. They're in my main display.... I've never seen my urchin near it, nor my angels.... I suppose they could be eating it, but I had this issue last time as well. Before I had the urchin or the angels.... the stuff slowly just dissapears.. What could be causing it?
YBeNormal February 7, 2007 February 7, 2007 Jason, No offense intended, but I think the dead fish, cyano bloom, crabs with missing legs, cheato regressing and other issues you've posted about recently are all signs that you need to slow down a bit with changes to your tank. Maybe it's just my impression but it seems you are always adding new fish and coral, changing out hardware, trying something new... Patience and attention to detail are key to this hobby. If you think the fish could be eating the cheato, then that is the first thing to rule out. Try fencing it off so the fish cannot get to it. Next check lighting, water parameters and flow.
jason the filter freak February 7, 2007 Author February 7, 2007 The cyano, or hair algea, or bubble algae, etc. Has been a problem in every ones tank at some point I've seen treads about it all the time. The cheato is not a huge pressing matter... I was just curious what could make it wayne. I haven't added new fish in more than a month it's a 55 gallon with three fish... I think thats ok. As for a crab with the missing legs I've come across threads on RC and a few other misc online fourms about both possibilites I came up with. Bad molt/agression from other other crabs I wondered if any one here had seen similar experieces. I know James has two in his tank, though it's more than doulbe the size of mine. I also know that I've seen cases in many animals not just inverts where a bad molt/shead leads to missing/damaged anatomy... It's not unusal in nature. As to upgrading my equpiment on a constant basis, being the budget that I'm on I have an ultimate goal I'm working on and as I get better componets I switch them out for older, innefective pieces of equipment. I can sight most instances of switching out equpiment to reccomendations from the club, ex. Ditching the seaclone skimmer, for the berlin classic, ditching the 150 MH, for the 5 x 54 T5, getting a controller for my heater, setting up QT tank, going with softies rather then SPS, all stuff that I didnt nearly have the budget for, but rather traded or got for free from other members due to inquires I've made on the boards here. I have a game plan that I've stuck to this far and plan to see out to the end. At which point I will start adding fish, and more expensive corals. Ahhh! Avoiding fourms and looking for just articles I found the answers I was looking for http://www.marineinvertebratezoology.org/Grapsusgrapsus.html Everything I wanted to know, regeneration is possible, as well as the can/will sometimes drop limbs.
ReeferMan February 7, 2007 February 7, 2007 (edited) If you know everything, why did you post? I agree with Ybe Edited February 7, 2007 by phisigs79
Caribbean Jake February 7, 2007 February 7, 2007 Jason have you checked your water parameters? maybe adding too much livestock could cause a spike in NH3/NH4 and kill some of the cheato.. Also, do you have a Tang in your tank? Jacob
jason the filter freak February 7, 2007 Author February 7, 2007 No tank, the olny fish occupants are a Bi-color 3.5", Elibi's 2" Clarkii's about 2.5", with the exception of the Bi-color who's been in there for about a month, the rest have been in there for a few months. I feel the tank is too small for a tang. I think I'll try the cage off method, to keep out everything but hermits and snails. Water params are pretty close to perfect, save alk and calc which I don't dose there for don't test for.
Rascal February 7, 2007 February 7, 2007 Jason: Could be your angels are picking at it. You may also want to consider the lighting. Chaeto (and most other Algae, I believe), do better at lower K. I suspect your reef is probably lit w/ 10K and higher. Cheap way is to stick a ball in your sump and light it with a PC spotlight bulb and clip light from HD. Check out this site: http://www.melevsreef.com/fuge_bulb.html , and the RC thread on the same: http://reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.p...mp;pagenumber=1

I looked into the lighting and I guess I should have known that considering all the bulbs we sell at work seem to be at the low end of the spectrum for plany growth... doh. Also the link it much appreciated. I was wondering what this home depot light was that every one was talking about. THANKS! IU had considered the angels, they just never seem to go near the stuff when i'm watching
