I'm working on setting up 330g and still collecting live rocks whenever I see good deal on them. The price on rocks has soared in last 7 years. I remember I used to be able to buy live rocks from Congressional at $4.99 a lbs and now, they're $8.99 :(

Anyway, I've been working on an idea of buying up all dry base rock and cultivate them in small holding tank with few pieces of live rocks. So far, one month into cultivating the first batch- life has migrated over to new rocks but coralline algae still haven't developed yet...

I'm very interested in exploring the option of buying approx. 200 lbs of dry base rocks and cultivate them. One negative factor behind dry base rocks that are bought commerically from LFS is their size and shape sucks! I know I can buy some directly from importers however, the cost is probihitive. The price may break down to about $3.99 per lbs when combined with shipping while LFS goes between $1.29 to $1.99 per lbs (feller river rocks)

Do anyone think I should invest more on dry base rocks and fill the tank up- I'll buy some big structured live rocks from Dr. Mac to define the reefscape. Is it wise to place so many dry base rocks in tank, I am not sure if those rocks might have different reaction to saltwater since they've been out of water for a while.

I have almost no fund to buy rocks especially when they're over $2.50 per lbs... I just bought a new 120g because my old 50g sprung a leak. :( If anyone can help by letting me know of great source to buy LR at very reasonable price- please do!!!!

I have a few pieces of dry rock left from when I setup my 90....I used the dry as base rock and them added my live rock from my 55 ontop of that.....worked great. As I said, I have a few pieces of the dry / base rock left unused and would be willing to part with them for real cheap (only taking up space) will take pics and weight as soon as I get back into town.

Cool!!! I'll await the photo and weight. It's more likely I'll take them :)

If you want some dry rocks, order from www.marcorocks.com. They are cheap and look great.

I checked out their link- some very nice formation however, the price is still a bit high compared to LFS. It is a possibility I might buy 25 lbs for creating structures.

If you'r not in a big rush, good deals on LR come across these boards quite often with prices normally in the $2.50 to $3.00 range (act fast to beat dhoch, flowerseller and others!). Another option is DIY aragrocrete rocks, probably the cheapest route you can go and little to no drawbacks if you have time (several weeks) to cure the rocks before placing them in your tank..

Troll track down some ReefBones from CaribSea (LFS have it sometimes, I got mine from Aquarium One in Rockville), I used about 40lbs on my 90 and it has wonderful size sand lots of shapes, very porous rocks.

Roozens has a coral graveyard that has a lot of small pieces that they used to sell for $1/lb. I have no idea what they sell it for now, but it is great for live rock with critters on it. Pretty smallpieces, but that can be good.

I'm looking for 8" or larger pieces, branchy or well structured. I might check out reefbones when I'm in Rockville. Is Aquarium One a new store? I really miss Super Pet Store, they went out of business about 5 years ago but have some best price on everything!!!!

I'll look into those, might be great for frags- disc and plugs can be boring sometime. Those will be great for softies especially zoos.

Ahhh, don't remind me about Dhoch! He always get everything before me. I think I need to spend more time at computer so I'll grab the chance and stay one step of Dave. :smokin:

Aragrocrete never really did well for me... I've created some before and over 5 years, they just break down plus too heavy. Also, it was one of suspected factor that cause huge crash in 2000 which I lost, well..., entire livestocks in 4 tanks.

Aquarium One is in Rockville, at the Winter Green Plaza next to Blooms, at the corner of Edmonston Rd and Rockville Pike.

If you want affordable high quality live rock, I have found exceptionally high quality on eBay. You have to be smart about how you ship it. There are ways to keep the shipping cost down and get fast delivery so you don't suffer much die-off.

You can pm me if you want.

Drs Foster and Smith have a great deal on some base rock. Not really sure how the rock looks but I'm going to order a box when it becomes available again. It's $60 for a 35 lbs box. So under $2 a lbs. Might be worth checking out.

Edit: Sorry, its liveaquaria.com and the rock is called fiji foundation rock. Same price and weight though. Not available yet.

I purchased my Dry Fiji Rock from Marco Rocks 2 months ago. IMHO, the best dry rock out there. It's Extremely porous and light. The guy is very helpful and allows you to Cherry Pick. Just let him know what size tank you have and the size/shape of the Rocks you are looking for. I asked him to cherry pick for my 75 gallon and what I got were several large pieces i.e 2 of the larger pieces were approx. 14" x 7" each.

The last time I emailed him, he gave me a cherry picked choice of 50 lbs of all small, all medium, all large, a mix or 1 - 50 lb piece

If you're not sure about his product, he is offering this on his site:

"Marco Rock Samples

5"-6" sample Piece of our signature Fiji Dry Rock

Pay shipping only now.

*ships USPS priority mail Flate rate of $4.50*

Place an order within 30 days and that shipping cost is refunded."

Currently, He has an auction on EBay (do an EBAY search on: Base Rock - Dry Rock 50# reef Aquarium Live rock): It works out at $2.52 / lb for a 50 box with shipping and insurance included.

Hopefully this helps...
