Guest beatle December 28, 2006 December 28, 2006 I know it's not really in the range of most people, but I was visiting with family in Chesapeake and I stopped at Animal Jungle on Holland Rd. in Virginia Beach. It's a very well run store with a huuuuge variety of fish (biggest store I've seen), including a large saltwater department. Their prices are unbeatable, and all of the staff I spoke with were very friendly and accomodating. I told them I'd be traveling 200 miles back to northern VA, so they filled all the bags with O2 and gave me a styrofoam box to put them in. Cleaner shrimp $19 2 inch mandarin $19 Blue-green chromis - 2/$7 Sadly, the cleaner shrimp died within 30 minutes of putting them in my tank :( (how the H-E-double hocky sticks does this happen?) but the others seem to be doing well. If you happen to be traveling to VB, this is a store worth stopping by, even if it's just to see their fish.

Guest beatle December 28, 2006 December 28, 2006 did you drip acclimate? that's awesome, i get down there a lot, i'll have to check it out!!! Indeed. I did it for 30 minutes, which some may consider to be too quickly, but I've noticed that when I drip for a long period of time (60 minutes) the water in my tupperware bowl gets cold. Fortunately the mandarin and chromis are still doing well. I may be picking up more shrimp locally this weekend. Any advice on acclimating them would be great.
Leishman December 29, 2006 December 29, 2006 (edited) I was there 2 months ago and would never go back. I thought the tanks were dirty and the staff cluless, not to mention the shark tank that was ~18" deep with 3' sharks in it. Maybe I was there on a bad day, but the shark thing is BS. I didn't give the shark pond a second look. Who did you speak with? Maybe I talked to the only two nice people in the store.
gioNVA January 3, 2007 January 3, 2007 Have to agree with Leishman. The corals were dying and the fish tanks were dirty. They do have a lot of stock. I didn't check out the drygood section but it looked like they have a lot of tanks.
quazi January 3, 2007 January 3, 2007 Very close to Animal Jungle is Fish Safari. A much better store IMHO. Leroy runs the place and is very intellegent. I compare him to Sean @ F&F. http://www.fishsafari.com/ FWIW, I have been going to AJ for over 25 years! It is an OK store, but very big with a lot of uninformed staff. That said, they have a few people that care, and they have a lot of tanks. I look at buying something from there in the same way I look at buying something from Petco or SuperPetz. You can get some deals, but you need to be careful. AJ is big enough that it is worth going to just to look. It is impressive.
