madmax7774 December 18, 2006 December 18, 2006 Hello, I am looking to lower my nitrates, and phosphates. I having been considering using this to try to lower these in my aquarium. What's the consensus on this product?? John
kngfisher December 18, 2006 December 18, 2006 have used it in the past....worked well except check that the filter-bag is sealed properly....the beads are non-toxic but they can spread quickly over the tank if the bag busts.
Rascal December 18, 2006 December 18, 2006 I use it in place of carbon. More for any stray toxins, alleopathy and overall water clarity than for nitrates and phosphates per say. Reason I chose it as a carbon substitute is in hopes it would not abosrb trace elements and leach phosphate back into the water. It serves it purposes for me very well. You might also try PolyFilter pads, which do a lot of the same things. If I had to choose one, I would use the PolyFilter. For chemical means of phosphate export though, nothing beats GFO (Rowa et al).

I have it and have used it, it works just as it says it does, the only drawback is if the beads have a chance to escape into tour system they are a bear to get out. They float, and stick to everything, kind of like crumbling up styrofoam into your tank. john Edited December 18, 2006 by johnnybv
madmax7774 December 18, 2006 Author December 18, 2006 John, I didn't even think of that when I was at the shop( I wish I had...). I got home, and put the orange monti, and torch in, and then decided to test my water again. The phosphates are slightly elevated, as well as my nitrates. I will grab some from next time I am up there. The torch seems very happy, he popped right up shortly after I put him in, and his coloring is amazing. THe orange monti is now the centerpeice of my tank. The coloring on it really draws attention to it, and I placed dead center. It really looks amazing. Thanks!!
Lee Stearns December 18, 2006 December 18, 2006 I have used purigen in the bag pouches several times- It is very easy and I have not had the misfortune to have one break open. I like it because it is rechargeable- when it darkens just put it in bleach for a few minutes , rinse and let air dry- and back into the sump- Primarily it absorbs nitrogen varients, Nitrates ect. My experience is that it can be recharged about 5-6 times before it seems to turn brown very quickly after putting back into the fuge. If you are testing and find a nitrate issue even with macro algea in the sump growing well then I would just drop a bag in the sump and check my levels in a couple of weeks.

Lee Stearns December 18, 2006 December 18, 2006 Good catch. I thought nitrates as well would be pulled out by purigen- Maybe just taking out the amonia and nitrites is what has caused the drop in nitrates when I check nitrate levels after a few of days use.
