jamal December 11, 2006 December 11, 2006 another rookie with high nitrates what a surprise. i am trying to figure out why i got it all of a sudden. my skimmer wasnt skimming consistently for the past few days. also i just cleaned off some various algal growths from my front and back glass. i feed my tank every other day or two. i feed frozen formula one and mysis shrimp and bloodworms. also pellets and nori sheets. i have a yellow tang a coral beauty angel and 2 yellowtail damsels. i have some snails for algae and detritus. i have a green millepora bali slimer (ithink thats it) xenia green star polyps a kenya tree and one other i cant remember what it is. i have 240lbs of live rock and 200 or so lbs of live sand. i have a coralife superskimmer 220 for a short time. thats it for filtration until i get a bulb replacement for my uv. if i forgot something im sorry but i wanted all the info available for a more accurate answer. oh yea i did a water change of 10 gallons a week ago and i change it every two weeks
jason the filter freak December 11, 2006 December 11, 2006 How old is you your tank? Running a sump? What is your flow like? How much are you feeding when you do? I don't even run as skimmer on my tank... how high are your trates? You don't seem like you have really sensitive stuff there and with 200 lbs of stuff just how big is this tank?

Jager December 11, 2006 December 11, 2006 if its only 20ppm its not terrible, you prolly just need to get a bigger skimmer or readjust the one youve got. anythign over 40 is worrysome anythign over 60 is bad, and 80+ is something big died and the tank needs alot of help.
jamal December 11, 2006 Author December 11, 2006 yea i have a coralife now that i just washed out yesterday because it stopped working but i will hopefully be able to upgrade my system with a sump and a better skimmer. most likely an asm g4plus or if someone is selling a better skimmer on here for 400 or so i will consider that an option. depends on how good santa is to me this year
rrubberbandman December 12, 2006 December 12, 2006 Jamal, i vote you are feeding to much....i firmly beleive in letting my fish "live off the land" 80% of the time..... Bryan
rocko918 December 12, 2006 December 12, 2006 tank is 3 months old Maybe the tank still needs to settle out. Give it some time, get a better skimmer and don't add anymore fish.
