HowardofNOVA November 12, 2006 November 12, 2006 I wanted to thank Chip FLOWERSELLER for keeping an eye on my tank while I was gone in MO last week! I've heard numerous times of folks leaving for the weekends or even a whole week without ANYONE checking on their tanks and FWIW, I believe this is a HUGE mistake! Things happen in anything left unattended and it can be the difference of a minor water refill for evaporation to an all out MAJOR problem. I've taken care of several tanks over the past and also had the pleasure to allow friends to come in and watch mine. Some of been uneventful and some have not. On the bad side, I've seen: Salt creep, short out the system requiring minor re-wiring. Pumps going bad that ran for long time and of course they decide to go while your gone. Electrical short at the wrong time shutting off the GFI and loosing some of your fishy friends! Call myself snakebitten or what, but everytime it seems I've left, issues have come up resulting in my "Tanksitter" having to call me and this time was unfortunately not an exception! I left my "Temporary" Plastic Sump hooked up while I was gone. In it I had my WON 300w heater with plastic cup holders attached for heating the system for the last few months (NOT SMART) while getting my new sump built. Not taking the time before I left, I assumed it would hold until my return. WRONG! One of the suction cups popped loose allowing the heater to lie against the plastic tupperware type bin, MELTING a hole allowing 6-9 gallons of water to run out onto carpeting. Also, trashed my heater and burnt plastic possibly leaked chemicals into tank I believe killing one of my Purple Firefish and Male Percula Clownfish. Thankfully Chip on his routine check of tank, caught it in time to save from MAJOR disaster! THANK YOU CHIP FOR YOUR HELP AND SORRY TO PUT YOU IN THE SITUATION!!! Bottom line: DON'T leave your tank more than 2 days with at least someone just stopping in to MAKE SURE everything is doing fine! DON'T leave for any length of time without setting up at least ONE Tank sitter if not more!! BACKUP!! When you do leave, do your tank sitter a favor, don't leave them a POTENTIAL problem waiting to happen!!! ....it will!!

Hey now, just because my tank only breaks when you watch it.... Yes, 2/3rds of those problems were on my tank. Thanks for all of your help Howard. For the record, I will be in town over Thanksgiving and Christmas and am willing to look in on tanks in the NOVA area.
Rascal November 13, 2006 November 13, 2006 For the record, I will be in town over Thanksgiving and Christmas and am willing to look in on tanks in the NOVA area. So will I, and so am I. Especially for any of you in the Alexandria, Annandale, Falls Church, Fairfax area, I really wouldn't mind keeping an eye on things for you. We will be in Puerto Rico the week of 4/1-4/7 so I wil be looking for someone to return the favor.
