With the energy company sending out winter storm emergency preparedness alerts, I've topped up the charge on all of my various backup batteries and chargers, dug out my battery powered airstones and sponge filter, and prepared extra saltwater for an emergency water change if needed. I also have hand warmers and a blanket to tape to the outside of the tank if necessary.  Anyone want to share your own good, unusual, or just enthusiastic plan to respond to potential power outages?  If you have MTS, does your emergency prep vary based on the size of the tank, or do you have a one-size-fits-all plan?

I have an inverter that can power the basics on my tank with a deep cell marine battery. The battery is kept on a trickle charge, and occasionally used for a very small bass boat. It’s kept a mag 5, x2 mp40s, and a heater running for 4 days no problems. I also have an air stone hooked up to a pump and a battery power.

granted, this was all on a much smaller tank, I’ve not rethought my EPP now that I’m bigger. Should be ok for a few days, and I’d always sacrifice our car batteries over losing tank contents, but if it comes to that, we are in doomsday times, and reef tanks are the last concern 😬

I actually had saltwater mixed but decided to just do the water change I had planned lol I do have rodi though always on hand.

I have 2 battery powered air stones that will go on when the power goes out in the tank at all times (and plenty of back up batteries). Blankets to smother the tank.

Other than that, not much.

I've got a random smattering of a UPS on both tanks, LiFePo battery packs, a 100W solar cell, a 12V lead acid battery, and an air bubbler.  All told, it's probably most of a day of circulation with some heat, then another day or two of just air without any recharging, but the car or sun could be used to get some extra charge.

It's not especially robust of a plan, but it doesn't involve too much equipment and can be configured a whole bunch of ways.  Without me in attendance, I figure I only have around 4 hours of circulation that automatically kicks in, and then probably only an hour or so worth dissolved oxygen in the tanks until that becomes a problem, and that's the part I'm more concerned about.

Hoping some LiFePo UPSs come along at a reasonable price point so I don't have to DIY (can't whole-house a system when you rent.)

I’ve had various iterations of backup batteries in the past, but went whole hog a little over a year ago and installed a whole house generator. 😁Now all the livestock in the house stays happy. 😃
