paulbj May 21, 2024 May 21, 2024 I bought some live saltwater rotifers from my local fish store the other day . there is some kind of fluff looking stuff floating in the bottle. I'm wondering if this is normal or has it gone bad ?
gastone May 21, 2024 May 21, 2024 Rotifers have a fairly short life cycle or between 3 and 5 days. Maybe 7 if they are refrigerated. I can't speak to the white stuff (got a pic?). Have you been feeding them phyto? You can keep the culture going, but it's more work than pods are and requires daily maintenance.
DaJMasta May 29, 2024 May 29, 2024 Depends on the stuff, I think, but to get much of an evaluation one way or another, you'll need some magnification. With a flashlight and a magnifying glass, you should be able to see if there's still movement in the water unless the density is pretty low, showing you if there are active rotifers, but really the tool for the job of figuring out whether they are there and what the gunk is, is a microscope. Any other pic or description? Could range from detritus or bacterial to fungus or even a film that has broken up.
