How far above the water do the bulbs sit? I run mine at about 8" with no shields. I would not recommend going any closer than this without a shield. In this instance the shield is more of a splash guard.

SE bulbs have shielded glass already. it's not a good idea to look directly at them regardless. i wear sunglasses when i have my canopy open for more than a minute, and don't look at the bulb.
