built my canopy and wondering if I need to put up some kind of glass or acrylic sheet under my metal halide and what has worked for you?

How far above the water do the bulbs sit? I run mine at about 8" with no shields. I would not recommend going any closer than this without a shield. In this instance the shield is more of a splash guard.

It's about eight inches or more off the water 250 watts on a 29 gallon tank, just wanted to know if it was harmful I get headaches when I take the canopy cover off....

if it's a DE bulb, it needs a shield. SE bulbs have shielded glass already. it's not a good idea to look directly at them regardless. i wear sunglasses when i have my canopy open for more than a minute, and don't look at the bulb.

*sniff-sniff* whats that I smell.... fried optic nerve? I don't know about the :smokin: sunglasses, but I'd have to reccomend not staring at the bulb.

figured I really dont need the shield only real concern would be just for a splash guard and jason I really don't need the tank thanks for the offer though. phisg79 how's the true percs doing for you? I need to stop by some time.....
