I just woke up and the power has been out for 4 hours, can't believe I didn't wake up!! My 90 gallon and sump have been sitting still for that time. My battery powered air pump is locked where I can't get to it. What do I do? Hydrogen peroxide? Can anyone help?
The sea hare didn't make it. Was eating it some when introduced. Mg is now 1325ppm, and algae is still growing....browned a bit where I squirted it. I'm going to begin the 0.5dKH/day climb today. Will also be getting a very hungry sea hare on Wednesday. My guess is that the sea hare from live aquaria wasn't going to make it anyway.
Great info! Thank you very much for the advice. I'm already bringing my Mg up and have tested alkalinity with three different test kits and with Jan.
For the baking soda part, I have found that a mixture 85% baking soda 15% baked baking soda will keep the pH from moving very much. Mine is pretty low already at 7.6-8.1. I think this mix will work better as I make the 0.5dKH steps.
Thanks again and I'll update this thread with the results. Already with the Mg increase the hair or byropsis is dying and my pH swing is less.
Hey Marc,
So Jan sent me this thread and your description above. I'm currently experiencing the first scenario where my dKH is 5.8 and Calcium is 600. I think the calcium came from the garf grunge I seeded my tank with. My other numbers are below:
Nitrate: 0ppm
Phosphate: 0ppm
Magnesium: 1215ppm
Alkalinity: 5.8dKH
Calcium: >500 about 590ppm
Do you have any advice for how to get my chemistry back into line?
So I have three clear gallon containers of recipe 2 bulk reef supply Alkalinity, Calcium and Magnesium. I never used them after mixing and they have been in the closet for close to a year and a half. All the solutions look clear...no sediment. Should they be good to use?
So I just started my 90g with a reef dynamics sump/refugium/skimmer. I used Marco rock..some spiffy aquascaping and a bunch of garf grunge. My cycle completed in three weeks. I just added my clowns that have been holding out in an old 10g. I run my fuge light opposite my actinics on the main tank...run the 400w MH for 4 hours a day. All is well...a little bit of brown diatoms showing up. But my cleaning crew shows up Tuesday (90 snails/45 hermits). So, everything is going well.
I just got an Aquacontroller III and now I need a heater for my new 90g. I have read several places that the suggestion is to go with two 250W heaters in case one goes. What do people think? Should I go with one 500W or two 250W? And what is a good source for heaters without a controller. Amazon sells the Finnex Titanium heater... seems good.
