  1. Do you care sharing brand, age and condition of the heater? I would like to know. Anyone who had heater failures or fire caused by a heater do you care to post the information I requested for future reference or to see if there is a manufacturer trend that we should stay away from?

  2. Dave,

Where in Mexico are you? Are you in Cancun or Cozamel?

Geez Mr. VP you aren't paying attention? He is in Mexico City :lol2:

BTW on Apr 5 Dave will be at the meeting in his Mariachi outfit serenating the attending wifes/gf to put money on their mans pockets for them to buy frags

  3. 1) Ph was sitting at 8.92 (topoff might have been off for 45 min before i saw this)

    2) Big turbo snail was releasing sperm like fluid over and over

    3) Wrasse didnt look so hot and was surrounded by slime.

Chris that doesn't sound too bad:

    1. As chip said in the past is best to let it correct itself, make sure you keep the lights off at least for today. When the lights come on PH will rise, keep that in mind.

    2. Not sure

    3. Wrasses wrap themselves in a mucus when stressed and for protection, I think your wrasse will be ok.

  4.

    That would be great!

Any time you want, we play on tuesdays in the summer at the Iwo Monument

YGPM, when or if you get the other piece I can give you some then.
  5. Well, I have never kept sps before so I want to try a few frags of that I just don't know what to choose first there are so many.
Russ I can hook square you away w/some SPS frags, some free some cheap.
I am located in Ashburn, VA, but I work in DC at the Marine Barracks where I am a musician.
Nice!!! Need to hear you play one of this days.
  6. I have had my tank up and running for about 8 months now. I have had very few problems (knock on wood) but I guess that is to be expected as I taught myself this hobby. In my 35g hexagon, I have 2 perc clowns, midas blenny, sixline wrasse, coral banded shrimp, 2 emerald crabs, cleaner clam, and a few random snails and hermit crabs. As far as corals I a small 3 branched frogspawn, a few brown polyps, 3 different kinds of mushrooms (fuzzy, red, and another with blue strips on a purple base), a small kenya tree, and a few orange zoos. All of these were frags, and are not very large. My lighting set up is weak and am looking to upgrade in the next few months. I have a t5 set up with one blue and one white light (sorry im a newbie at the technical terms). But enough with the details.

I have been going to a few local shops and looking at corals and to be honest, shocked at the prices.. so I am wondering if any of you out there would like to frag some of your corals or are tired of something that you no longer want. I have absolutely no problem paying you what you think is fair, I just dont want to pay 50$ for some small piece in a fish store. I am looking to get a good variety so anything that you think will survive in low to medium light- my tank gets direct sunlight about 6 hours a day.

Please feel free to post on here or send a message... again, I have no problem paying for corals, i just dont like to feel as though it cost me an arm and a leg.

    Thanks

Honest answer: Spend $20 and join the club wou will save "your arm and leg" the moment you have access to the For Sale/Trade/Auctions/Group Buy area. There are some awesome deals going on right now on livestock.

  7. This is a information gathering thread. If there are members interested in doing a group buy, please start a new thread in the group buy section.

VENDORS, that are profitting from a group buy of the kalk may list their products and prices in the vendor section of the forums. Additional discussion should be brought to the attention of the officers, and should be left off this thread.

Doug what I gathered from Davids post was that he was setting a big GB for his products to sell online and that at the same time when he orders other people can piggy back through his order and get bulk discount and save some $; not him buying it and then reselling it after he generates interest of his GB.

David was that what you meant?

If people are interested I will be setting up a group buy for a bunch of items which I will be selling online. I will be driving my truck to pick a bunch of the stuff up from the supplier because I dont plan on getting full pallets of the products until I see how different items sell. I am also picking up packaging supplies at the same time so it pays for me to pick the stuff up. I will be posting a group buy and what items will be available in about 2 weeks.
  8. Well you know me... I have to say something. One question only:

    1. When you went to BRK did you pick and watched your 2 clowns before bagging them?

I LOVE BRK and the staff. I don't make it there as much as I would like (good in a way or I would be broke) but when I make it I spend about 2 hours talking to John, Byron and the rest of the gang on getting advice which I very much respect. Ask John or Byron last time I was there I studied my 2 fishes like a hawk for 30 minutes or so, ask them to let me see them eat, ask what they were being fed and how often, asked them how long they were in the store, asked them if they were bullied by other fishes in their tanks and lot more questions, in the end I got my 2 fishes because I was happy with every answer I got. BRK is one of the best LFS in the area. John can tell you that I praise him on the great work they do almost everytime I see them or call them.

  9. Well today the movers showed up to pack up the house in San Diego. So I am one day closer to getting to DC. I probably wont start the tank until late next month. My wife insists I unpack the rest of the house BEFORE I start on the tank!

I will keep you all posted with pics of the process and progress.

    Ron

Welcome back, when you are ready for frags LMK and I'll get you started it.

  10. SPS or LPS that have bright colors including blue, that are interesting to just stare at, that will live and grow well in my tank no matter what I do with the water.

That and a 2-month vacation in the mountains where there are waterfalls and perfect weather that doesn't get too hot or too cold, where there are very few insects, where I don't have to dress in anything but loose-fitting comfy clothes, flipflops or beatup canvas tennis shoes (or hiking boots), where the only noises are from nature, etc etc. I'm not picky!

Your ideal spot will be EL YUNQUE RAINFOREST IN PUERTO RICO

I'm getting a little off track here and I don't want you to be offended by what I'm going to say but your tank is way to young for you to start doing things of certain high levels of expertise. I mean: 1. your tank says is 30G and you have a hippo tang there wether is 1/2" or a little bigger that is no place for a fish that requires at least 75G of tank room and that it will rather sooner than later outgrow your tank, 2. you have a BTA in a tank that isn't mature, 3. you don't have an adequate skimmer to keep your water in the pristine conditions that an anemone requires, 4. you have a clam that follows the water quality rule mentioned above and is that clam epoxyied to the rock? (no, no, no your damaging that clam), 5. you keep ignoring and blowing off the advice in other threads from people who have been in the hobby for many many years and are trying to help you through establishing a healthy tank, we are not trying to hold you back, we just want to make sure your tank becomes solid as a rock so you can create an awesome enviroment for your critters. This hobby takes alot of patience and is for a reason, remember "nothing good happens on a reef tank when you rush it". Remember that this hobby is not about a wow effect or to impress the people but more like creating, understanding and more importatntly conserving the reef eco-system through propagation.

As I said before I'm not trying to hold you back or insult you, I just want to help you understand and help you create a solid eco-system and then you can make it as bad-arse as you want. Once you got the knowledge the sky is the limit. If you have any questions or need help feel free to let me know and I'll do my best to answer and if I don't have the answer I know who the right person to ask will be.

  12. Howdy Raf,

My pair actually prefers a group of BTAs to the H. crispa they have now(small H. crispa in first picture off this thread). They are not really picky and have called at least 10 different anemones/corals home over the years. For folks intent on breeding, I would be recommending BTAs or nothing at all, the overfeeding to maintain high yields drives the maintenance interval too much for my taste :)

Picture of the pair before the skunks and nigripes kicked them out of the BTA colony:

    gallery_94_6_48495.jpg

fwiw: Don't be surprised to see slight changes in coloration as they change species of anemones.

Saw you might be selling your pair, they would be a good deal for anyone interested in a hardy pair of clowns. So much better to pick them up after a few months of conditioning :)

Take care and all the best.

    Scott

Awesome response Scott!!! Thanks for the valuable information. I actually ended up with 4 Black ORA misbar juvi and 2 Black non-misbar juvi clowns. One pair perished in a return pump accident, one pair is in my display and the other pair is on my QT. Right now there are couple of things I'm tinkering with a few things in my head so one might officially be selling one or the other. Are you going to the meeting on Sat? I would like to ask you a few things in person.

  13. Scott I have a pair of Black and White Ocellaris and a RBTA, is that a suitable anemone for that particular clown? I saw your the pics you posted about your b&w clowns tank and I didn't recall seeing a BTA or any other anemone for that matter. Thanks for your help.

  14. Does he have well water if he doesn't the clorine would kill his fish!
Well if hes on fairfax county water they have recenlty changed their chlorine policies. They used to only put the cholorine gas in their water, but they have been putting in the solid form too. Or so I've been told hope this helps!
Well, he's kind of a newb, so cut him some slack. ;)
Wait did I do something wrong? Or say something wrong I was always told that they put in diffrent things then just chlroine gas locally anyway. They told me in college that they put in another form of chlroine a sold one. Not just salt I can't remeber the formula hope all is well Troy

Since 1988 he has written the column "Reef Notes" in Freshwater and Marine Aquarium magazine, and he was Science Editor from 1993 to 1995 for Aquarium Frontiers. In 1991 Julian wrote and narrated the video, An Introduction to The Hobby of Reef Keeping, which was the first product of Two Little Fishies, Inc, the company he formed with Daniel Ramirez. Two Little Fishies now publishes books and CD ROM'S, and manufactures a variety of popular aquarium products and foods for fishes and invertebrates.

A common theme in Julian's approach to aquarium keeping is to study the living ecosystem while keeping the technical support system simple. By promoting this philosophy he intends to increase the enjoyment of the hobby and attract those who might otherwise be deterred by the cost and complexity of "high-tech" aquariums.

  15. Kind of coll if you ask me...

NEW: Tank Raised Fire Shrimp. Be the first to get your NEW aqua cultured Fire Shrimp. These are available on a limited supply. We are the first to carry these in the USA. The price is still much higher then wild caught, but you are helping to support Aquaculture Farmers in the Aquarium Business and the animal is already acclimated to tank life.
