  1. hey-

i'm trying to move my big furniture out of my house tomorrow... i need help with a dresser and a mattress... is anyone in the rockville area and can spare like 15 minutes? they're not heavy, it's just a two person job, and both my roommates are booked tomorrow.

i have help unloading at my destination, but i just can't do these two items by myself.

if you can help, i'll pay / beer / food / whatever. :) and you'd have my gratitude.

shoot me a pm or reply to the thread.

    thanks!

    Charlie

  2. Carla-

I just went through the same thing a few weeks ago with my 90. We lost air coniditioning in the house, and it went up to 95 for about 8 hours. I lost all my sps and some of my bigger LPS.

The only advice I can offer is not to give up on things too quickly. I had several coral (micromussa, acan, blasto) that looked a lot worse than some of the LPS pics that you posted, and they've recovered completely, in some cases, and in others, just lost a few heads, but the rest bounced back.

Good luck, and try to see the positive in what survived! :)

  3. This clown is really going to hurt itself, going wacko. I cut the lights out early tonight, because she's getting too out of control with the reflection issue she has had. She is now not only slamming head first into the glass, but banging her sides and tail up against it... over and over again. As soon as the lights go out, she stops. I decided to let the coraline stay on the side walls to limit the problem so she will only be able to see herself on the front. So then, what do I do then about the front? Surely this must hurt her.

is this a captive bred clown, do you know?

not to anthropomorphize too much, but it might have something not right in its head. the only thing i could think is that it could be a captive bred that has some issues.

i've had a couple clowns, both wild caught and captive bred, and i've never heard of them doing anything like that. sounds like it might be something akin to when fish swim in circles.

  4. i'm trying to take pictures with my digital camera, but they are very washed out with the main lights on. any tips? or is this just an angle thing?

i've tried playing with the white balance... but my color representation is just way off.

    any advice would be awesome.

    i have a panasonic DMC-LZ2

  5. Im planning to upgrade my tank in a near future. My concerns are:

Im planning to hold all my fish and coral in a 15g tank (not much just a frew sps, zoas, shrooms) for maybe 4~5 days for my new tank to go through the cycle for the first day. Im not sure if they are going to be okay in the 15g or not...

Also about the sand. what kind of sand will not create a cycle or a least reduce the cycle to minimum because im planning to buy new sand and seed them with my old sand.

caribsea live sand i've heard is really good for shortening the cycle.

how many fish do you have and what kind are they? coral should be ok in a 15g. fish, maybe, maybe not.

  6. I'll endorse aquactinics fixtures. I have a Constellation for my 180g. I was going to buy one new when I started out, but jamesbuf happened to be breaking down his 180g and sold me one that was almost new. He'll tell you, too, it's great. I certainly like it a lot.

second that... i just got a 36" aquactinics for my new 40g that i'm setting up... it appears to be a great fixture with excellent reflectors, and great build quality. Tom is also great to deal with. I'm definitely going to be picking up a 24" for my frag tank in a month or so.

currently i have it over my 20g holding tank, running

    ATI Aquablue Special (12000K)

    UVL Super Actinic

    Geisemann Daylight (6000K)

    Geisemann Actinic Plus

    ATI Aquablue Special (12000K)

the light spread and blend is very even. i like it a lot so far.

I should have my coral into the holding tank tonight, i'll try and get some pics if anything is happy.

RIP galaxia from Aquarium 1. Fell upsidedown onto my sarcophyton, and couldn't save it. :( but it's a cool picture.

    one minute for pics

  8. Someone yesterday posted about some online store that just came back open. I looked at that sight and it had mimic tangs/mimic surgeonfish (lemonpeel & chocolate), which I had never heard of. According to that online store, mimics can be kept in 50 gallons and don't get as large. The rest of the tangs shown were rated at typical volumns, which makes me inclined to trust the 50 for these smaller animals.

Depending on the opinions of other people here about the size requirement, the mimics might be something to consider.

The lemonpeel looks to me more like an angel than a tang, as the bodies are not triangular. It could be an alternative to both the angel which is not reef safe, and the yellow tang which requires at least 100gal.

Anyway, anyone have an opinion on these mimic tangs?

lemonpeels aren't usually reef safe either... and very delicate.

i'm not sure about the mimic tang.

  9. aren't most of those fishes that you mentioned, aside from the gobies & blennies, considered semi-aggressive fish?

they are, but clowns are semi-aggressive as well, in fact, certain species, once they hit muturity, can be among the nastiest tempered fish in home aquaria.

semi-aggressive is really an individual thing... i've seen pygmy angels that were very docile, and ones that terrorized an entire tank. it can happen with any fish. baiscally, add the least aggressive fish first. so if you want a watchman and a flame angel, for example, put the watchman in first and let it get settled.

clowns, in my experience, are kind of the exception, because they generally like a bit of their own space, and they're usually able to carve it out.

  10. i currently have 2 osellaris, a bta, janitor crew, yellow polyps & hammerhead coral

i need suggestions for 2 more fish to put into my tank. most of the ones i want requires 75+ gallons so i'm looking for a non-aggressive fish that can handle a 55 gallon tank.

i'll probably get a blemmy in about a month or so but i need more suggestions.

    Thanks guys.

you could do a pygmy angel, like a flame or coral beauty... also cardinalfish can be cool, gobies, blennies, and fairy wrasses... but fairy wrasses are notorious jumpers, so if you get those make sure you get a lid... anything else from the damsel family are ok.

clownfish are pretty aggressive, so they should be able to hold their own with no issues with any of these fish.

  11. Probably, but it depends on what you are asking it to do. It helps if you know how many degrees you need to drop. For example, I get away with a 1/10 HP JBJ Chiller on my system (approx 200G total volume). Most would say that is way undersized for my system, and they would be right. I just ran out of money when I was setting up the tank so that was the most I could afford. I make it work for me by setting things up so that I only need the chiller to drop the tank by a few degrees. I still use cooling fans on the sumps and lights, I cycle the MHs off for a "shady" period in the late afternoon when the house temp is hottest, the AC keeps the house below 75, and I installed an outlet in the AC duct in the basement where the sumps are. With all of this but without the chiller, the tank's temp would hit 84-86 degrees. With the chiller it almost never breaks 82. I have the temp controllers set up to keep things b/n 80-82. This is a little hotter than I would like it, but with the stability it is at least tolerable.

So I would say for your size system as long as you are only asking it to drop 5 or 6 degrees or so you should be fine with a 1/10 HP.

yeah, we're talking like, 4 degrees max.

maybe i'll get the 1/5 just to make sure i have enough.

  12. i'm trying to get a chiller for my new setup, as i've had major temp issues on my current 90, and want to keep a good solid temperature in my new setup.

    40 gallon breeder

    20 gallon frag tank

30 gallon sump (15 gallons of water normally)

lights... 5x39w t5 on the 40, and 5x24w of t5 on the 20 frag tank

deltec ap 500 skimmer and an eheim 1262 to feed both tanks from the sump. i may have to put another pump in for the frag tank.

this is my first foray with chillers... do you think 1/10th hp would do it?

    thanks!

    charlie

  13. k cool!

umm what should the salinity and temperature be generally...

    1.023

    and what like 78 82?

my seahorse tank is 1.019 and 72-74 sooo im assuming hotter and saltier than that

most reef tanks run at 77.5-79... it depends on what works for you. you can look at the TOTM stats on RC to get a picture of average reef tank temps

80 is getting to be too hot.

  14. i just read about that- what about a realy small one?

i just cant see how they can catch a fis let alone eat one with such teeny features

a really small one will become a really big one. they end up averaging 6" and i've seen them 10" across, but even at 3" they can easily take out a sleeping fish of that size.

they use their legs like a cage to trap. just because their claws are small doesn't mean they don't hunt actively. :)

they are the pinnacle of crabs as opportunistic hunters in home aquaria. in nature, they probably never catch a fish, but in your tank, they'll get em.

i would not recommend. heck, even emerald crabs will start to hunt eventually.

  15. thanks for the tips guyes.

haha, some are just huge man. peps will only go for the smaller ones.

i'm talking, like raquet ball size, at least, fully inflated. :)

i'll joe juice them i guess.

do you have to inject them in the body? or just on them. i've never been to clear on that. you'd need a medical needle to inject them actually into the flesh of the animal themselves, wouldn't you?

    thanks!

    charlie

  16. so are certain clams and corals able to survive under something like a combo of HO 10K T-12s & actinic T-8s? That's all I had before getting the T-5s, and I was certain from everything I read that it wasn't enough even for low-light corals.

if by t12's you mean vhos... you can get some button polyps and maybe a few softies/easy LPS with those, but i don't think SPS or clam.

i'd say you *might* be able to get away with a squammy or deresa under a lot of PC, one of the more brown ones... but the vivid blue/green ones need more light.

  17. i have some live rock in a holding tank that's pretty overrun with aiptasia, that i took from my dad's tank experiment when he broke it down, it had just gotten away from him.

i think there's just too many to inject, but i'd like to get rid of the aiptasia before adding this to my new tank. the water quality was great, he just let the aips get out of control.

what would you recommend? total dry out? putting it in a closed container with no light? something else?

    any advice would be appreciated.

  18. Buy the SLR T5 Retrofit Reflector's. High reflectance, maximized angles, and individually clips to each bulb. Your corals will be pleased and you will be to. DIY something else that does not have such a direct influence on the coral health.

Then get an Ice Cap 660 ballast and OVERDRIVE.

i just ordered a 36" aquactinics fixture yesterday... i'll post a review in the review section when it's up.

i'm excited. if it works well i'll get one for my 20 frag setup as well, that's got PCs on it right now.

  19. I think people are underestimating the power of T5s.

I have a 90g with retrofit T5s. The setup has Triad Ballasts with Ice Cap reflectors. I also have a variety bulbs.

OK, I have 6x54s, but one of my timers got messed up and I've been running 4x54. Since I have been so busy, I haven't had the time to straighten it out. I've been running 4x54s for at least 2 months if not 3. A few of my SPS frags (including Acros) got knocked over by some crabs. On top of that, my bulbs are pretty darn old. They are about 2 years old. I have the bulbs to replace them, but I haven't yet.

So basically I have 4 bulbs running on my 90g, 2 year old bulbs, and SPS on my sand bed. Oh yeah, on top of that my Calc and Alk is on the low side. The ones on the sand bed are doing great! I've seen a huge growth spurt with those guys.

i think mainly the debate is how much having individual reflectors increases the useful light output.
