  1. The largest one is the one that died. The two left are definitely in great health and eat like crazy. If I can't find a male, I'll wait till one of mine changes and then buy another female. The two I have don't really fight that much, so I can't tell who is the dominant one. Guess I'll have to wait and see, unless Johnny can find me a male.

actually it's better to get that 3rd female now and then let the top one of the 3 change, especially if both females you have now are docile. if you wait, you could end up with two dominant females (1 of yours, and the new one) and that could end up causing a lot of stress to the fish.

sean gets squarebacks in a lot too at F&F.

  2. No worries, Nube. Even though I am very much a chick, I can be quite the hooligan when I want to be! :)

The actinics popped on just before I left the house, so I couldn't resist a quick shot with the cell phone. I ended up turning off the skimmer for the day, as even with the cup set high, it had 1/2 inch of fluid in there after only about an hour. When I am home tonight to monitor it, I will turn it back on and tweak it.

was that a new remora? skimmers need a few days to a week to slime up all of the interior to get good action going, sometimes, especially my remoras. also, if you didn't have a lot of dieoff, there may not be anything really to pull out, which is good. i really like the remora, it's simple and effective. it won't support a really heavily stocked 46, though, so make sure you plan your fish accordingly.

looks great! what light is that?

  3. lowes in the the back of the store to the left (gainesville) It located where they have a bunch of tiles and diffuser for ceilings. Its not where the lights are. If you can find it ask where the diffusers are located

hey the tangs you got from me look happy! good to see it! are they still getting along?

    how do your angels behave?

  4. looks great, your tank has made a lot of progress over the year

    wow, awesome!

did you change your lights during summer 07? what lights are you running right now?

i notice a drastic difference in coloration towards the end. :)

or was that just getting rid of the PO4?

    awesome, just awesome!

  5. I'm not sure. I really haven't seen him on here in awhile. You can always call. He also has email. I know he gets it and if you ask a question, he'll probably respond.

he's so busy right now that responding to PMs or email is chancey at best... i believe on the board he's just posting sales and not participating, per se.

call the store if you have a question! don't be afraid of the phone people :)

  6. Can someone tell me what kind of shrimp is there that will not eat snails?

My cleaner shrimp was the victim of a clown-initiated avalanche several months ago and I want to replace it, but not with one that is going to eat my snails like that one was doing. Every time a snail somehow turned over, the shrimp got it before it could right itself (I have heard that only certain snails can... does anyone know anything about that?). It also stole food right out of the fishs' mouths - do all shrimp do that?

if it's doing that, you might need to start target feeding your shrimp, or just make sure that he's getting some food. i never had that happen.

was it a skunk cleaner? or other?

i had my skunk go after stuff that was dying, ie, if i missed a turned over snail for a few days, but that's about it

  7. For some reason I thought bangiis are now being captive bred... am I wrong?

they are, but most that you see in any store are wild caught... basically, being "captive bred" usually puts a premium on the fish. for instance, wild banggais are ~17.99 ish... captives can go for 35-40.

it's cheaper by far to catch them (due to other side of the world labor and prices) than to breed marine fish.

go in any fish store, and the ORA/captive breds will be more $$ every single time, and specifically labelled as such.

anyway, i wasn't suggesting that anyone did anything wrong, i just kinda randomly spouted there. :)

  8. I have a mated pair of false percolas clownfish that I bought from Jake about a month now. They were the first pair of fish that I have in the tank. Since then, I added two small black and white percolas and a purple pseudochromis. Within two days after adding them into the main tank, I witnessed the female clownfish attacked and killed both of the new black and white clowns. As for the fate of the pseudochromis, I don't know. I have only seen it once. It might still be alive but in hiding. Does anyone know whether it's normal for mated pair percolas to claim the entire tank as their territory if they're added into it before other fish are added or are they generally very aggressive and will attack anything smaller than they are. I would like to add other fish into my tank but afraid that they might attack them as well. Would it help if I take put the mated pair into another tank for awhile , then add them back into the main tank after I added other fish into it? Any idea?

    James

how big of a tank is it?

usually pairs of clowns will not tolerate other pairs, unless you introduce them all at the same time, and even then it's a toss up. ... however, since your first pair was established, it's usually impossible to add another pair.

i'm not sure how big a tank you have... in a 4-6' tank, you might be able to get away with adding a 2nd pair later on... but anything smaller, not likely. i wouldn't try 2 sets of clowns myself in anything less than a 6' tank.

probably the pseudo is ok and just acclimating to the aggression. they're nasty little buggers as well, (well they can be) so it'll likely be ok.

remember, clowns are damsels too, and like i'm fond of pointing out, gold striped maroon clowns are among the most aggressive aquarium fish in the trade, period. :)

sorry you lost the b/w's. :(

  9. no, sorry for the confusion - I don't think anything negative about any LFS, I am just interested in how the club is doing with this fish, only because I know that we snatched them all up. There would be a return policy if the liability wasn't 100% on the fish purchaser, and that is clearly understood.

The fish type and LFS are irrelevant to my interest, it's just an opportunity to see how 30 or 50 or whatever number of $35 fish survive in our various setups, and if we're already down 1/3 to 1/4 of them after a couple of weeks I really don't know what that says.

i agree. reading about this sometimes makes me think that this hobby does as much harm as good in educating people about reef conservation. while we do that, we're slowly (or not so slowly) killing them ourselves.

i mean, look at the bangaii cardinals, they're getting close exctinct due to solely to our hobby.

  10. Re: tang.... everyone says at least 75 even for the smallest. I REALLY want a tang, but haven't gotten one because people saying it. Do you think it depends on tank dimensions (which would make sense I think)?

it does. hawaiian koles are among the smallest and most docile tangs out there. i had one in my 58, but i don't think i'm going to be putting one in a 40... they will outgrow that... just not enough room. Howard is very experienced, but I'm not confident in my ability to keep one happy in a tank that small. I also was already planning my upgrade to a 90 at that point, and saw a good specimen come through, so i grabbed it. not this time, because i have no idea when i'll be upgrading back up now, so no tang for me.

i wouldn't recommend. i'm probably going to do a trio of chromis and/or a trio of cardinals... i'm going to have a lot of water in the system, and way overskimming, so i feel i'll be able to handle the bioload just fine. we'll see. maybe a goby or two, though, honestly, i always worry about them in bigger tanks, as it is hard to give them the attention they deserve with more aggressive feeders.

  11. The Randfordi will suck on sand continuously all day and of course grab an easy copepod when available. Being the tank is just getting setup, I would feed them occasionally live brine.

IMO, A Tang or two will be ok for a 40g tank! Powders was probably a bad suggestion, at least 75g or more them. I like the Yellow Eye Kole, mine did a good job in my 30g Frag tank before he bit the dust!

ok, thanks howard, i appreciate the advice. thanks!

    charlie

  12. Do you REALLY want the GSM?

-sorry, I know they are beautiful, but too much attitude for me, especially for a 40g tank?

    Suggestion:

Yellow Clown Goby - Flashy and alot of personality

Tailspotted Blenny - Oct, will do a GB for another to restock my tank

Court Jester Goby (Randfordi) - too me, a MUST for EVERY TANK! Sand cleaning abilities are second to none!

Tang or two: Yellow, Black, Yellow Eye Kole, MAYBE a Powder Blue/Brown, etc

2-3 Green Chromis or Blue Eye Cardinals

howard... i think a 40 is just too small for a tang, honestly... maybe i can snag another kole.

also, don't the randfordi need a certain size sandbed, or they'll end up eating everything in the sand, won't they? kind of like a dragonet? i'm not sure.

    thanks!

i don't really want the GSM, they're just too cool.

  13. To answer the first question, you'll need a 36x18 inch footprint for your sump tank. AGA makes a 30 breeder, 40 breeder, 50 and 65 gallon tanks in that footprint. The 40 breeder is probably the ideal model although you may be able to fit the 50.

On the other question, AGA is currently undergoing a name change involved with the integration and reorganization of several companies. Very soon AGA tanks, etc., will be called Aqueon. The web site, while not yet complete, is www.aqueonproducts.com.

bk is getting my 90, and a 36x18 will not fit under the stand...

hung, have you considered plumbing the skimmer so it is external?

  14. bangaiis? a few blue reef chromis?

    I find both underated.

i agree doug. thanks for the suggestions! sometimes we forget about the "basic" fish. can bangaiis be kept in groups? i thought they had aggression issues.

  15. clowns would be an easy hardy addition as well several species of goby.

a lot of gobies are jumpers in my experience... but i'll look into them more. i'm living with my mother for a while, and her one requirement on the reef tank was that she wouldn't "have fish flopping on the floor". :)

i'm looking also at orange line cardinals. anyone had any experience with these?

  16. well, i'm almost done setting up the 40 breeder I got from jwildman... just waiting on the overflows.

i'm starting to look at what fish to put in it... does anyone have any suggestions?

i'm looking for the following qualities...

    -hardy

-not inclined to jump, as i'm going to be running open top

    -preferably captive bred

i'm looking at a pair of GSMs, but I'm not sure if they are captive bred, or some other clown type. the setup is a 40 breeder with a 20H frag, 30 long sump, Deltec AP 600, and fuge.

This is going to be an LPS/softie tank, with possibly 1 or 2 pieces of easy sps.

i've also thought about going fishless, and just having shrimp and other critters in there, but i think that would just be not as exciting in a way.

    thanks

    charlie

  17. Charlie97 - You are right about the asternia starfish...I don't mind them too much...and they don't seem to bother anything. At one point, I was able to count 50+ of them in my tank, plus the ones I couldn't see...perhaps because there was a good deal of algae on the sides of the tank they were eating.

I've had my tank since 1999 and never had an aiptasia issue until recently.

So...Dave...I will take you up on your offer once your tank is aiptasia free. I have learned over the past few months, that a quarantene system is important. I've never had a quarantene setup...but will be using one going forward.

there have been reports of them eating zoanthids... however, usually it came out that the zoanthids were on the decline, perhaps even already dying... and clean up crews go straight for that stuff. when i had a clam, man i had to freakin pull it out when it got hurt (falling powerhead) because my cleaners started going straight for it.

  18. carl-

what problems have you had with asterinas? i've had them in 3 tanks with no issues.

also, if your problem worms are bristle worms, they aren't really an issue, IMO, until they get large, and then they're usually easy to remove with traps... but especially if you have a sand bed, i think they are essential.

i think if you have good live rock, you'll always have things that you don't want... for instance, i hate those little featherduster worms, as they attach to the sides of my lps, and can irritate the polyps... or they end up in the middle of a zoanthid patch, and do the same thing... but most people love them and would think i'm crazy for not wanting them in the tank.

aips, on the other hand... well, if you truly want an aip free tank, you'd better have peppermints, and QT every single piece of coral you bring in, as only a smear of an old aip on a frag plug or rock fragment can bring them back. that's going to be the real issue, i think.

  19. Powder coating alone would cost twice what you paid for the shelf unit.

having gotten many things powdercoated for cars and motorcycles, i can 2nd this. it is very expensive. it's probably just painted metal.

looking great on the progress! keep up with the pics. i love those 20K helios!

did you ever get the levelling issue sorted out on the stand?
