  1. Ok I have a pair of green chromis... one is starting to pick on the other after about a week. I haven't seen any nipping, just a lot of chasing and attempted nipping. I know they are schooling fish... if I get a 3rd one do you think that might calm them down?

  2. Only green water.  Algae on the substrate won't be affected at all.

thanks for the clarification. that's what i meant! sometimes you have to be so specific in this hobby :)

  3. it's a given UV will help with algae... but there could be other issues as well. what kind of water are you using for top off/water changes? if it's not RO/DI, or if you used non-RO/DI to fill up the tank initially, that could be a big factor for the algae as well. others feel that for less established tanks it can wipe out beneficial mircoorganisms.

from what i understand, there's a big debate on this topic, at least from what i've read online, regarding the disease protection that the UV provides. some people believe it's a huge help, and others think that it provides too much of a "clean room" type environment, lowers the animal's natural resistance to infection, and therefore if something gets in your tank, it can be catastrophic.

  4. Well, I have the props, glue and carbon rod.  I'll pick up the airline and other sundries tonight if I have the time.

Anyone know where to find 1.5" PVC test caps?  Lowe's didn't have them last time I was there.

I'm going to order the kit from the guy on RC and use a couple of 900s. I'll let you know how it turns out. :)

  5. mine isnt level either.. just keep the water above the black trim. i cant wait to see how my DIY stand comes out  ;)

cool, i kind of anticipated this, and i figured with a 58, i'd be ok. just wanted to make sure.

  6. When I set up my tank, I used a good level on the stand and the tank, but now that it's been sitting for a few days, and probably compressed the carpet, it's sloping veeeery slightly towards the front left. I mean really minor. maybe 1/8". I only noticed because of the water level. Is this cause for concern? It may have been like this the whole time, but my leve was within the lines at all times during the setup.. Just want to know if I'm ok or if I should try and fix it. It's a 58 RR Oceanic, btw.

  7. I took my skimmer out from under my stand with its pump tonight and realize I have a real problem on my hands.

The 1" bulkhead for the drain from the oceanic tank is leaking.  There is salt creep everywhere and the floor of the inside of the stand where the skimmer sits is all messed up.

I think the stand is ok, but I will need a new bulkhead.  The tank is quite old, so it doesn't surprise me.

What size/brand of 1" bulkhead will fit in the drain hole on the Oceanic 180?  If someone has a dry Oceanic I would appreciate it if they could measure the hole for me.

So much salt everywhere.  What a mess.

    Thanks.

It should be pretty standard. I have the two "oceanic" brand bulkheads that came with my 58RR if you would like them, you're welcome to them. I ordered PVC compatible bulkheads from marine depot... any that are labeled to fit a 1" drain will work. I believe 1 3/4" is the size of the hole. If you want, like I said I have a few extras laying around. Brand new, never used.

  8. Thanks for all the warm welcomes.  :)

Welcome from me as well! Fellow new member here, I just joined a few weeks ago, and am loving it. Just from my short time here, I've found a lot of good information, and help with my setup questions, and equipment from forum members (Thanks William and Don!) so far, and continue to expect that in the future.

Just to toss in about the effectiveness of the sale/trade section, as that seems to have gotten lost. The stuff you need is out there, not as much in terms of quantity as RC, but personally, with something like this, I'd much rather see it beforehand, and meet a fellow hobbyist... plus you never know what unexpected offers or deals might come up from meeting someone in person rather than an anonymous internet deal... for example, I got a lighting setup from a member last night, and he was kind enough to offer me some LS to seed my bed when I was ready for it, without any kind of inquiry on my part.

I've found thus far, especially if you're looking for something specific, if you don't see it in the FS/FT, post a WTB/Looking thread. Many people have stuff laying around they have forgotten about until they read that someone needs it.

Again, Norboo, welcome, and I hope to see you on the 25th!

  9. can i use the one kind that comes with the RR tanks? i think theyre called durosos or somthing like that? id like to drill my tank but not the bottom. could i use the duroso things and make the wholes like 3-4 inches up from the bottom?? i think that would work, but i know nothing about plumbing or overflows......

    51625[/snapback]

the durso standpipe (if that's what you're referring to) is basically just a tool to quiet down the overflow, normally the water will drop like 20 inches, but with the durso, it lets the overflow fill up almost to the top... you could get your tank drilled from the back, no problem, and od a custom overflow out the back, that would work fine... i'm not totally clear on what you're asking though. drawings are always good. :)

  10. 1) consider your budget & what corals you want to keep.

    2) do you have any thoughts of upgrading your tank in 6 months to a few years?

    3) other than blue ribbon koi/marine in manassas, not many other shop in va area with fair prices vs. online.  [not sure of baltimore shops like exotic aquatics]

online - champion, premium, marine depot or hellolights.com all good prices.

With 4 vho's not sure what space is left in a 55 canopy.  If no upgrade plans, look at T5 or 150 hqi.  If you think you will get bigger tank in future, then might as well get 250w & you can use on your bigger tank in future.  In 250w range, I like hqi.  400w range, mogul still best deal for that watt for now (hqi is here in 400, but limited bulb selection in 400's vs lots of 400 moguls)

ok, thanks for the feedback... i probably will upgrade in a few years when i get my house. i'm planning on pulling out the vho's entirely, and going with a MH/some actinic for color.

thanks for the help guys, if anyone has anything else to add, toss it in.

  11. where's the best place in the area or online to pick up a MH setup? my new 55 gallon tank setup i purchased yesterday (acrylic tank, sump, stand, the whole thing) has 4 VHO bulbs and an ice cap ballast... I think it'd like to just have one that mounts on the underside of the hood.

also, for a 55 gallon, would i need one MH bulb or 2?

    Thanks!

    Charlie

  12. hey guys, I paid early yesterday and sent the form in, but I still don't have access to the rest of the site? I'm not in any rush, I just wanted to make sure everything was ok.

    Thanks!
