Hey all-
I know it’s been a while since I’ve spoken to most of you. I broke down my big tank several years ago during a move, and have been keeping a small tank going in the interim, saving a lot of my nicer gear.
However, over the course of a divorce, two moves (one of which broke down my small tank), and starting a new business, I’ve resigned myself to the fact that it will be many years before I can re-enter the hobby, if ever. I have some pretty decent equipment and tanks still sitting, and I’d rather see them used and loved than just gathering dust.
I really enjoyed my time as a member here, it’s a fantastic community, and I thank all of you for that, seriously.
I’m going to give the community here first shot at this stuff for a week or two before I put it up on RC. The tanks are local only, so they’ll be up until they’re sold.
Any questions, or if you’d like more pictures, please let me know. All of the equipment except the tanks has been stored in plastic storage bins in a temperature-controlled garage for the past few years. The tanks have been in my clothes closet, covered with cloth to protect them (with the exception of the BioCube, which was my active tank).

yes a time and cash crash, not so much cash just the end of my degerr the last two semesters
what happened to allll the corals
-
so the tank may be down and gone but its still here in spirit... well kind of most of the equipment has been dissiminated though the club, the tank went to one of my old managers at petsmart, which is funny because i got it from a dirrerent manager at pet smart, all the fish and coral are gone but... the clowns (which i got originally from fishwife) were moved to a fellow wamas members tank until i was able to set up a new tank, it took a little longer than i thought so the clowns were given to another member to try and breed them, it was mostly unsuccessfur until recently but now they're laying eggs woo! so at some point im hoping to get the adults back or some offspring . the anem i will have one of the clones for my new tank, the sand (still dirty and ready to cycle) will be used for my new 54 as will the sterilizer
Did you have a crash?

Ecoxotic Photon Cannon 50w 12k.
i'm sorry, i know that's what you're using now, i mean the led bulbs that were in the fixture? those seemed to work well.
thanks!
also, is that a perfecto tank?

So shall it be written, so shall it be done.
Here's a few more too-
What kind of LED bulbs are those?

I'm starting to get worried. I brought a Yellow Headed Goby home on Wednesday and I haven't seen him since. I have been looking all around in case he jumped, I tore apart my sump and I'm contemplating aquascaping just so I can try to spot him. Is this normal behavior for such a fish? I can't help but think the worst!
what size tank?
-
your friends' company must sell CUC.
In my experience of nearly 20 years of reef tanks, I have found that you only need 5-10 hermits per 100 gallons and about twice as many snails. when the hermits want to eat something other than detrirus or algae, they eat snails. If you keep a small amount of hermits, they'll eat less snails. You also keep more than just nassarius because there are other types of algae that nassarius don't eat. The fish also play an important role in the reduction of algae.
while i agree that that is waaay too many hermits, i think he's suggesting using a fuge with macro algae instead of turbos/algae snails as your main form of algae control in the article.
at least that's how i read it. if you have a good fuge, you won't really need algae eating snails, in theory.

some pics of the coral in question would help i'm sure.

Went by Aquarium One in Rockville the other day, and they have done most of a major overhaul. Coral looked fantastic. Fish also.
You can tell they are really trying to up their game, especially from the last time I saw things about 2.5 years ago. Lots of fantastic looking frags.

CHARLIE!!!!!!!
Wat up!!!! Hit me up bro! PM me if you need my number.
Man, I was not expecting this kind of response to my return. HA
Chris, I will hit you up in the mornin' via PM.
-
Hooo boy that looks intense.
So I guess you'd get what, one of those and some blue led strips for a tank my size?
-
CHARLIE!!!!
SEAN!!!!

Smart order as one could prevent the other
HA! No, she's into it. We can't get a dog or cat because of my allergies, so we're setting up a FW tank and a reef tank to satisfy the pet itch.
-
what size tank you thinking?
i have a custom acrylic 20x18x18 tank left over (never seen water) from when I got out of the hobby a while back. it's designed to be sumpless, and I have the HOB filters/skimmer/fuge still sitting around, so I think that might be the way I go. Of course, since it's acrylic, I could easily add a sump, I guess, I just am thinking of keeping it simple this time around.
2 things I'm missing are a stand and a light. I'm looking into DIY LED but there is SO much information out there I'm having a hard time finding a guide, and/or how many LEDs and of what kind I should use over a tank my size.

Hey all!
Well, after a 2.5 year hiatus, I'm thinking about getting back into this wonderful hobby.
I changed careers, got a fixer upper house (and fixed it up), and am getting married, so taking a break was definitely the right call for me at the time. I also moved 4 times in that period.
I'm going to ease back into the community. I have a bunch of gear still laying about that and I'm going to see what kind of setup I can put together, but I probably won't have the actual tank up until after I get married in October.
Anyway, hi again to all you crazy DC reefers that I know, and I can't wait to get to know the ones I don't!

2 t5 should be fine.
if you're just running them as actinic supplementation, 2 will be just fine... however, if you want to toss a few 12K T5s, that wouldn't hurt either.
with 10K xm and actinic UVL t5, you get a really nice clean crisp white color. sounds good man!
-
I suspect that there is something else going on besides the lighting. Mushrooms don't really care for a lot of light anyway.
me too.
however, to the OP, if you take zoanthids that are colored up under intense MH or overdriven T5s, as a lot of the really bright ones are, and put them in a lower light environment, they can fade. it doesnt' happen to every morph, but i've had it happen to me a few times.
coral colors can and do change. god, my fungia plate coral has been a different color in every tank it's been in.
anyway, what are your water readings? that will help us figure it out.
what size tank, and what filtration are you using?
