Bush to Create Largest Marine Sanctuary

    By JOHN HEILPRIN

    The Associated Press

    Thursday, June 15, 2006; 12:37 AM

WASHINGTON -- The world's largest protected marine area is being created around the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands, an archipelago 1,400 miles long and 100 miles wide that is home to rare marine mammals, fishes and birds.

President Bush is to announce on Thursday his decision to create the nation's newest national monument from the vast chain of largely uninhabited islands, atolls, coral reef colonies and seamounts.

  3. I was able to score 6 bags from Dr Mac last fall. He bought all the remaining bags from the Southern State in his area. You might call him and see if he has and/or is selling. Also has good deals on LR.

In my searching 6 months ago, I talked to the company. They stated that they had lost the rights to mine tropical sand on the island and that you may find some left over in stores. Good Luck on your search.

BTW, I used to carry a little film canister filled with vinegar for easy testing in the store :)

    Regards,

    John

its definately silicia it says so on the bag and didnt fizz one bit. Should i still use it? It seems that some articles say its ok and other say not to use it. anyone using it right now and see adverse side effects?

  4. I agree ... just not the same quality as other books. I am not saying it is a terrible book, but I would not rush out and buy it again.

    John

Extremely uneven. Some sections are full of useful information, presumably based on their own experience. Other sections seem to be based on guesses. For example, the sponge section was fairly useless if one were to want specifics on husbandry. It was as if they wanted to put together a comprehensive book, even if it meant they had to cover things that they didn't know much about.

The quality of the proofreading editing is pretty bad as well. Almost as if it were a first draft rushed into print.

  5. I just got the book and it is ok .. not my favorite book. If you like Calfo I would suggest Book of Coral Propagation. It is an excellent book that has lots of valuable info IMO.

    Good luck.

    John

Does anyone have this book? Is it worth spending $15 to get it (It is $30 from Amazon but I have a coupon)?

    Thanks

  6. I have 4 tangs in my 180 (Sailfin, Yellow, Purple and Blue Hippo) and they are all doing well and thriving. The purple is the most aggressive of my four. However, he and the yellow tang are the ones usually going at it. With that being said, he is usually (~90%+) fine and I have never seen him bother any of my other fish.

Like Jake said, I would put him in last and if you are getting 2 tangs, I would suggest that you get two with differnt body types, like a purple and a hippo for instance and I highly suggest you put them in the tank at the same time.

    Good Luck,

    John

  7. I have been running a 200mg Red Sea unit and have been happy with the results .. though I have nothing to compair against, since I have not used other units. IMO the Red Sea is good except for that you cannot calibrate the ORP controller :( , which is just plain stupid. Only other thing is that you have to keep the ORP probe pretty clean (I have been aiming for weekly cleanings). Good Luck Anton,

    John

    PS. Happy Birthday Jake :)

    Thank you Anton :bday:

I been reading on them too, and if any I will go with aquamedic bacause of the price and quality.

  9. I agree with Gadgets on the Chromis ... when they get comfortable they stop shoaling or schooling. They only get together when its chow time or they feel threatened.

    Good Luck,

    John

    I love my anthias!

I don't think that chromis school. They schoal (sp) Once they get comfortable in the tank they don't hang around each other too much. IME

  10. I will third that ... I have had good luck with the Kent Garlic extreme. I have also had good results with Selcon. Since using both, I have seen no ich.

    Good Luck,

    John

Same luck here, I lost a lot of fish to ick- tried several remedies- wich killed my favorite and only angel (koran). I tried Garlic extreme, after a week there were no visible signs of infestation and no loss of fish ;)

  11. John ... great pictures, really great. I have 4 tangs in my 180 ... Yellow, Purple, Blue Hippo, Sailfin. I bought them all the same day and put them in the tank at the same time. They all get along fairly well. The yellow and the purple tail each other once in a while. For the most part they get along.

I think the key is to get them at the same time, at least it worked well for me.

    Good luck,

    John

  12. That is a fine way to start a "New Era". Why post here if the Management and Ownership of Wally's "hates Wamas"?

I will let my money talk on this one :)

    John

    Great, we appreciate the note!

So, lastnight I took a trip to see you.  I was looking for a new pump, a few buckets of salt, tests...etc.  When I started talking with the guys (young kid and older guy) behind the counter they informed me and I quote:

"The owner hates WAMAS, we appreciate your business but please don't talk about WAMAS, show your membership card (for a possible discount)" .... "Feel free to take it up with the owner or go somewhere else".

Now while sometimes you get a guy with bad feelings, there were two of them there (one who looked like a manager) telling me the same thing!

Long story short, I only walked out with a pad I badly needed and red slime remover only.  I'd prefer to take the much longer trip to Blue Ribbon Koi where he respects reef freaks like me and the organization I prefer to join!

    Enjoy your new store.

  13. Hi there,

I have a 180 and am running 3 @ 250W MH's with 2 @ 6' VHO's. I have an enclosed hood with 2 of the icecap variable speed fans. So far (started in Oct and am in the basement) my temp has been real good 79-81. I still have the fan in the hood and a fan on the sump card to play if need be, not sure if I will have to do it. To me the chiller is a last resort.

From my experience, you should be ok with the MH's.

    Good Luck,

    John Wildman

I ran dual 250w MH on my 120g and used 4 4" fans and didn't have a heat problem.  I did have a 4 degree fluctuation in the temp (78 degrees lights off - 82 degrees lights on).  I downgraded to a 26g and use T5's with it and I will never go back to MH.  You get brilliant light without the heat issues and you can have a lower profile canopy with the T5s.  Plus, the only temp fluctuation I get now is 80.0 to 80.4 degrees.

  14. This site has the best comparisons that I have found online. Hope this helps

I'm finishing off the planning stages for my 300 gallon tank (I've given up on going bigger and am sticking with the plan) and wanted to finish off my lighting.  Despite the success people are having with the T5 bulbs, I'm going to go with 400W HQIs.  I like the look and I think it'll be worthwhile with the amount of light I can put out there.  Anyway, I'm buying the rest of what I need now, but I'm not sure what bulbs to get.  I know that 10K are not nearly as blue as 20K, and I don't want a totally blue tank as I like the whiter lighting, but I don't know of the color of the 20K bulb.  Anyone used these or have any feedback on there own as far as coloration?  I could also mix and match getting 2 10Ks and 1 20K if that would mean not having to supplement with actinics, or even doing the opposite and going with 2 20Ks and 1 10K.  Or, if you know of any studies on these bulbs with side by side comparisons on any other site, refer me to them please!

  15. Heya,

The ONLY place that I have found that has the sand is Dr. Mac's. I have looked around the Northern VA area for months and did not find any. Dr. Mac is selling the Southdown Tropical Playsand for $6 per 40lbs bag. I used 5 for 180Gallon.

I did not try John at the Koi place as I was not aware of him at the time.

    Good Luck,

    John

I'm looking for the same thing, as I've got to put sand in my 180 gallon soon, and defintely do not want to pay the premium cost for those 15# bags @ $20-30 each...

  16. Jacob,

I have a TDS meter and a PSI meter. Would be happy to lend you for diagnosis purposes. Just let me know.

Great, that shares some light in the matter.  My unit is the one called COMAPCT at airwaterice.com and you are right it is specified for 75GPD.  The ratio is currently 6 to 1, and the pressure more likely is the culprit.  Now, on the web site as well as the documents I received from airwaterice.com it calls for a DI to be replaced every 3 to 5 month depending on usage.  (or is it the membrane?), now you got me confused.

  17. I too am setting up a 180 and have made both my stand and a hood. You are welcome to come over and check mine out. I am in the Herndon area.

    John

    Hey all,

I'm getting a 180 gallon tank but don't yet have a stand for it.  Most likely I will construct one myself, however I thought I'd post and see if anyone knew where I could get one cheap.  I'd prefer iron, but would settle for a wood one.

    Thanks!
