If interested, please PM. Also will edit this tonight with items I may have missed.

  2. I woulld like a couple of liters for a starter culture, will bring a container to the Fragfest.

I would also be interested in a group buy of Cryopaste, just let me know.

Doug ... I will be happy to transfer some over to you or give you a culture when mine grows out a little, just let me know. Also would be interested in a strainer, if you order let me know and if I order I will too. What are you going to feed them?

    Regards,

    John

I think the only strain useful for saltwater is B. plicatilis. I will bring a 5 gal bucket of them to the frag fest for anyone interested in starting a culture. I can group buy some cryopaste for anyone interested. Some of the local shops might have it though.

  3. I was using it for a while. Got to be too much work and cost. I saw some good results. But to be honest I have seen better results from Kalk and CA reactor and keeping better tabs on my water quality.

Not slamming Zeo ... just not right for me.

    John

I think that John Wildman is using the Zeovit system.

  4. I would recalibrate. Also check the PH in the tank/sump and then put some tank water in a cup and test. Are they the same? If so, probably a probe problem. If not, I would add a grounding probe. I had this problem.

Also have you cleaned your probe? And yes it is very annoying :)

    Regards,

    John

Have you tried to recalibrate it? I find that I have to recalibrate mine once a year.

  5. I agree ... need both. Grounding probe will do no harm and will reduce/stop stray voltage. It does NOT in any way replace a GFCI. Also you should find the offending piece of equipment and replace it.

I also have found that have a probe in good working order will help with PH probe. See thread called PH way up.

    Good Luck

Yes, I use a grounding probe and I wouldn't have a saltwater tank set up without one. Yes, providing a source to ground closes the circuit and allows electricity to flow. That's good though 'cause it will be the path of least resistance and the preferred route for the current to take--rather than through my body. I'd much rather have the fish die and me live than the other way around. Just my humble opinion...

No, adding a grounding probe is not the solution to your problem. It is only a safety measure. You should always track down the source of the leak and correct it as soon as it is identified. The typical source is a powerhead or a shorted light fixture.

  6. Justin,

I test software for a living and have an AC III ... would be happy to test this. :) Post it or send me a PM.

    Thanks,

    John

I am working on a replacement for Aquanotes which will feature a web interface where the app itself is hosted at a reliable datacenter. I am sick of aquanotes crashing and not telling me when it can't get data from an aquacontroller. Most of the features I am working on relate to high availability and robust monitoring of aquacontrollers, but I may eventually put in features like livestock tracking etc. I tend to just use spreadsheets to do that sort of thing though. Once it is in a more usable state, I will post here and see if anyone with an AC3 wants to help test it.

  7. Anyone know of any LFS's that are worth seeing in New York City or surrounding areas? Also anyone been to the New York Aquarium in or near Coney Island?

    Thanks in advance,

    John

  8. My RBTA (from Chip) split yesterday ... yeah! Do I need to do anything special for feeding or handling or just leave it alone and let it do its/their thing. Only bad thing is that my clowns have separated, they now have their own personal RBTA. However that will soon change ... when new clone gets sold :)

  9. I did a DIY stand and hood for a 180g tanks (72"x24"x24") you are welcome to come by and see anytime, actually nites or weekends. I am in the Herndon area (sorta near BRK). PM me if interested.

    Regards,

    John

  10. I would get a new one. Costco has brand new ones for about $350 that will keep key components running for days. Just make sure you have 5 gallons of fuels and some oil. You will be safe and able to weather all but the worts electrical problems. Also would suggest you buy some battery operated air pumps with air stones. Good for keeping O2 levels up while running in a degraded mode.

    Costco Generator

    Be prepared :)

    Satellite,

Thanks for the information on the life of the motors. It was something I was concerned about, but no longer. Living in the city (DC), and based on prior power outages, I might use it once a year for 48 hours (so far only like 4-6 hours once a year). At that rate, the generator will be a rustbucket by the time I get to 480 hours!

Tank requirement need a heavier duty generator. Thanks for the harbor freight link.

  11. AC III is awesome, I don't know how I ever had a tank without it :) .... if you ever want to see it in action or setup in Herndon. Give a holler.

    regards

    John

If you're ever in the Vienna area, you're welcome to swing by and take a look at my ACIII setup.

  12. Link to presentation is dead .. anyone have a copy of it?

Sorry for the late feedback, been away from the site for a bit. My two cents is the cost was totally not an issue, neither was location. So long as its near a metro station, I am definitely going to try to be there. In fact I would have LOVED to be there, but my company has a "retreat" type outting every year on this very weekend. I was even looking forward to the fact that it was an all-day event. Oh well. Really, I think it was just timing/scheduling. If people can't make it for the whole day, they can stop in and stop out. Perhaps there could be a "reduced" entry fee for part-day (1/2 day) or something to encourage people to at least come out for part of it. But really, I don't think the cost was an issue. After all, we all spend hundreds of dollars on lights and skimmers, etc. What's a couple bucks for a meeting and a good cause? Not a big issue. Further, if there were an option to chip in an extra buck to be donated to a good fish cause (conservation/education) I would have done that too (like some of the supermarkets do around here).

  13. I get cakes of dried seaweed from Great Wall SuperMarket on Gallows Road near the Beltway. Each cake is about 4 inches thick and about as big around as a dinner plate. Is priced about 2.99, have seen in on sale for 1.99. Smells like the ocean and the tangs love it. I put mine in and it is gone in 10 minutes at the most. Also been using it for about 18 months with no problems.

    Cheers,

    John
