  1. So I am diving deeper into the Apex under world.

Now I am trying to figure out the best way to get live video of the tank on the internet using Apex.  What do you guys use to achieve this ?

Do you need an additional Apex Module for this or can you just plug the camera into one of the USB ports in the EB ?

Is it easier / cheaper to just use one of the many security web cameras and point it at the tank ?

  2. Does it recognize multiple Apex's on the same network? I have 1 Apex Lite and 2 Apex Jr.s controlling 3 separate tanks on separate floors and sides of my house (otherwise I would have used the Lite to control all).

Yes, you can add multiple Apexs to Fusion.  Based on what I have seen, it would appear that you can even add different Apex from different locations so long as they have internet access - that is the whole idea of the cloud.

  3. From Apex PM1 Manual -

Why read the Manual ? I have WAMAS

Thanks, I am glad I found this out now, here's hoping 24hrs of it being fully submerged won't do too much damage.

  4.

    .....

Make sure the probe is not fully submerged. Unlike the temperature probe, the pH probe cannot be fully submerged.

    ....

I didn't know that the PH probe cannot be fully submerged.  I just started using my brand new one last night.  Seems to be reading fine (8.22).   Should I submerge it half way or just the tip in the water ?   Hope I did not damage the probe by fully submerging it.

  5. Uhhh.... I turned them off in my Windows control panel and my virus program.

Not quite sure what you did, but it would not be a good idea if you have a totally open network -> any one can hack your internal network.

Also do you have access to your Apex away from home ?  When you use your phone at home, it is probably using your home Wifi => you are still in your internal network.

Have you tried accessing your Apex from work ?  That is the what I am currently trying to do.

  6. Yes I did and to be honest, that was the most complicated part mostly as I'm trying to figure out how to turn firewalls off etc. But I'm literally looking at the screen on my phone and loving how easy it is to manage.

So I too now have fusion set up, in my home network that is.  What firewalls did you have to turn off ? My ISP is Verizon FIOS.

Any one has tips of accessing the Apex on the internet ?

  7. I think because of you now Drs. Foster and Smith has Neptune Systems stuff as stuff that coupons cannot be used on (at least their 10% off everything one right now) XD

Darn it, I should have bought more Neptune stuff with that order !

  8. I just set mine up last night, and I was having issues with the Return Pump and the Skimmer randomly turning off, even though I had them set to generally be ON all the time (I needed to read more before I started getting too into it).  But I hadn't added the SET value.  The pumps just kept turning on and off at what seemed like randon intervals.  Once I added the SET value, they stayed on and it worked perfect.  I like Fusion's web functionality.  I was laying in bed and turned the tank lights on just to test it.

I'll be playing around more later tonight.  I am very happy with the system so far, and I can see this having enormous potential.  Here's a good website with some of the programming code.  http://www.kenargo.com/apexProgram/index.php  My boyfriend is also a programmer/IT guy, so I'm emailing him the manual and hoping that he can explain some of the more difficult sections to me and write some code!

I thought the Fusion was very easy to set up. The hardest part for me was figuring out how to log into the site (it didn't recognize the first account I created).  Well, and flipping between Fusion's limited instructions and the Comprehensive manual which doesn't include Fusion information.

Did you have to update the firmware of your Apex to use Fusion ?  Mine is asking me to do so.

  9. I am a Apex newbie. After a weekend of Netgear networking issues to connect my Apex to my home network, I am finally ready for the next step. The only thing I see on the web interface is the tank temperature, as basic as it gets.  As such, should I start configuring with Apex Fusion; not bother with the default Apex setup ?

Reading this post does not give me much confidence, I may be trained as an engineer but that was a long time ago and let's just say they no longer allow me access to the computer room.  I also see the Neptune refers to Apex Fusion as "Beta".  Beta gives me the creeps, probably due to being an old school engineer. Is it still Beta ? I dove into the Apex world as in insurance policy for the tanks so Beta seem to be contradictory to that.

Being in IT, the "Free in the Cloud" makes me nervous. Will it be one of those it's free for now, get you hooked, then start charging a subscription fee deals ?    Has anyone switched to Fusion and then revert back to the regular Apex ?

  10. I just received my new Apex.  Ordered an Temp Probe along with it. Now I see I also need another module to use a 2nd temp probe.  I can see more items coming as I start digging the Apex money pit  .

Thank goodness it was my wife's idea that I send the money to "look after the cute fishies" while we are away.

I got mine at Dr Foster when they had their 10% off. So where is the best place to get Apex accessories ?  Any recommendation for reliable Amazon, Ebay or CraigList sellers ?

  11. ....

    First Chamber -

Overflow (overflow pipe has a felt filter sock to prevent detritus buildup) and small Fuge with chaeto

    Apex Temp Probe

Is there a reason why you put your temp probe in the sump instead of the Main tank ?  I have mine there since the temp is always a degree to 2 more, probably due to the LED lighting.

  12. I also have a 40 Breeder and a sump / fudge hooked up to my 156 DT

Here's what the setup looks like

    sump

I have always wondered if the macroalgae I have growing on the left is doing any good.  For that matter, it is doing any harm if it does not grow well, i.e. die ?

I see others in this post also have a 40 Breeder for a sump.  Where do you place yours ?  I have always wonder if there is a better layout for what I currently have.
  13. I have a decorator crab, about 2", in my frag tank.  It was one of those, "It's a sale and it's cool! Let's get it!" buys.

I was planning to put it in my FOWLR tank.  I did not know how aggressive it could be with inverts.  I have also since found out that puffers and hermits don't go well together too.   Since I am will to give up on having hermits in my FOWLR, I am now thinking of putting the decorator crab in it.  My only concern is that I do have slow moving Urchins and a star fish in it.

Do you guys thinks this crab will have Urchins and Start fish for dinner ?

  14. I too am looking for a new heater.  I am thinking of the Cobalt but I am not sure what material it is made out of.

I know it is not titanium since the manual say you have to let it cool for 15 mins before removing it from the water..

I have been leery of non titanium heaters since ... waking up to this in my sump recently ...

  15. My acan at an anemone once. It was a sad day for me. My anemone seemed to be having a bad day and detached and must have somehow fell right in the mouth of one of my large acans. I tried to save my anemone as it was completely engulfed, but it was too late. The anemone was intact so it must have been recent when I noticed, but it eventually never made a full recovery and had to take out my anemone. Sad day.

Acan eat an Anemone ?  How large is your Acan ?  Any pics ?

  16. I know that anemones can sting corals.  I have been lucky that my giant BTA stays at one end of my 156G.

Does anyone know if there are certain corals are are compatible with BTAs; more like are there any that won't be killed by BTA's sting ?

I have a mushrooms near BTAs and they seem to be fine.  Are softies less prone to death by BTA ?

  17. So i bought 3! boxes of instant ocean salt when pet solutions was having a great sale.

..............? My system is about 400g and I change 100g at a time.

How often do you do your 100G water change.  How do you do that, manually carry water ?  I did a 36G water change using 6 buckets and I am about dead

....... RC actually costs more then IO so it sounds like you got a deal!

Acutally, Petsolution saw that you do 100G water changes and decided to bait you with a free upgrade to RC .

I used RC and have no problems. but remember hearing that you can go from IO to RC but not the other way around.

  18. Amazon has Eheim Jager 300w in damaged packaging but new condition for about $25-30 with free shipping.  They basically ONLY get 4+ stars, which on Amazon I take with a grain of salt, but the LACK of multiple 1 star ratings is definitely a good thing.

You should get it from Petsolutions -> http://www.petsolutions.com/C/Aquarium-Heaters/I/Jager-Thermostatic-Heater.aspx

Brand new one for $25.19 ( Don't know if it's the same as what you saw on Amazon, this one is glass ).  Buy some salt ( also on sale ) and you will get free shipping since it will be more than $49.

Bought 2 salt yesterday and got FedEx tracking for delivery tomorrow !  That's free shipping too !
