  1. I want to attach another medium to large tank to my current system to use as a refugium/frag growout tank.  Does anyone have an extra tank laying around they'd like to be rid of?  Some scratches and other cosmetic blemishes ok, but it has to hold water. :)  I'd prefer acrylic over glass due to ease of drilling for bulkheads.  Looking for 55gal and larger.

  2. Thanks to Eve and Peter for opening up their homes and showing off their tanks.  I had a great time and got some new reef ideas for my own tank,  Once I get some more corals (thanks for getting me started, Eve) I'll host a tank tour of my own.  You can all charter a bus to get down here :)

  3. Thanks for the help...I may just wait a while until someone local prunes some corals back, but my tank is so empty!  It looks like the next meeting isn't until October?

    Dbartco, you've got PM.

  4. Used to be that Jeff's Exotic Fish had the best price around for basic corals like xenia, GSP, brains, polyps, and leathers with his 9/$99 deal.  Even with shipping, it was a lot cheaper than I could find local here in the DC area.  Now that he no longer has that offer, who has the next best thing?  I've been to Roozens and The Reef Tank and will likely buy some corals there, but is there an online dealer that even comes close to Jeff's 9/$99?  I'm resetting up my 125 and would like to get a bunch of "starter corals" to begin stocking it.

  5. My aptaisia vanished in a couple of weeks after I introduced peppermint shrimp to the tank.  Plus those shrimp are great to watch!

  6. I have a Condi Anemone that never seems to learn that getting sucked into a power head is not a good idea. It has happened about 3 times now. This Anemone has been in the tank for over a month.  After the first time, I placed a sponge at the power head intake.  It still managed to get sucked in between the sponge and the intake so I placed a rubber band around the sponge.  After a few weeks of success, I found it sucked in between some crack in the power head.  This time I thought it was a goner for sure since when I removed it since some of the tentacles were decapitated and it was all shriveled up.  But it seems to have survived again, it’s was back to it’s full size by sun set and looks great again this morning.  I am even thinking of removing the sponge since it is less harm full to it when it gets sucked in there, not to mention a lot lass work having to clean that sponge on 3 different power heads every few days.

Does anyone else with an Anemone that loves power heads have a suggestion on what else I can do ?  I am beginning to wonder if it get a “high” from the strong currents of the power head !  I know one of these days it will get an overdoes !

I think anemones move to whatever lighting and flow conditions they find optimal.  Maybe yours is trying to get to the higher flow area near the output of the powerhead, but ends up getting sucked in the intake, which is probably nearby, right?  Maybe you can adjust the powerhead to point more directly at the anemone's "perch" on a rock, and give him enough flow so that he doesn't move.

Another solution might be to set the powerhead in a position where the anemone can't get sucked in.  Mount the PH farther from the tank wall and rockwork so that even when extended, he'd have to let go to get to the PH.  It may be hard to rig a PH from the top of the tank, but you might prefer it to anemone puree.

  7. Thanks for the help, guys.  I'd love to trade frags, but I have to get some first.  I just finished plumbing the tank last weekend, and I'm finishing the hook up of the RO/DI so I can make some water and fill it.

  8. Has anyone had a positive sighting of southdown or old castle sand lately?  I've checked the HD in Fredericksburg and Stafford, the Lowes in Fredericksburg, and the Wal Marts in Fredericksburg and Stafford.

  9. Thanks for the warm welcome!

I'll look into the novus polishes, but I was hoping to find a place that will professionally polish the tank so it looks like new.

I live off of route 17, a couple miles west of I95...seems like every street in this state has a number. :)
