So I've been trying to deal with this algae for a while and I was told it was a few different types of algae when I asked on another forum. I'm pretty sure it's not bryopsis since it doesn't have "fins" and I'm pretty sure it's turf algae but just wanted to confirm. It seems to grow in clumps and not get too long.
If it is turf algae, do you have any recommendations on how to treat it? I've tried various snails, urchins, and fish that eat algae but it's been untouched. I would like to leave taking out rocks as the very last resort if possible.

Yeah I am thinking about doing the same. I tried to see if people had issues with algae barn but it seems pretty good so far.
Wow. Glad this was posted. I had never thought of QT for Chaeto.
Razz, let me know how it goes. I. Plan to use Cheeto in my build in about 3 months
Will do
-
You either QT it, like you do everything else, or you get it from someone you trust.
Remember, if you're going to properly QT, you have to QT EVERYTHING.
Hmm thanks for the input. Since I don't have room for QT right now I'll try to get it through algae barn or similar since it'll likely introduce less pests than ones from LFS or other tanks
-
I'm about to start a chaeto reactor finally and was wondering if people "clean" chaeto for pests like you do with frags or fish QT. I hear chaeto can carry a lot of things but haven't heard many people talk about cleaning or QTing them or how to do it.

Clay additive to keep the salt from clumping in the bag. It doesn't harm anything. I try not to stir my saltwater continuously while it's in the reservoir, but only turn on the pump for about 15 minutes every 24 hours to turn the water over some. That seems to help with the deposits somewhat.
Thank you very much for letting me know. I guess my old salt didn't contain any, since it's a new thing for me. I'll try turning the pumps off and see if that fixes it. Thank you

I just noticed that the premixed saltwater started forming a sort of brown slime on the surface of the water. It was congealed on a powerhead cord so I skimmed that off along with whatever I could on the surface. What is the cause of this and how should I prevent it from happening again? Also do I throw away this saltwater now or do you think it'll be safe to use regardless? Thanks

Apparently they were much closer to their rated spec 6-7 years ago; mine both produce 1.9ml and from the reviews on BRS, this seems to be pretty normal.
Another recommendation for the BRS dosers, I've had mine for something like 6-7+ years now and they still work like champs. I check their output every 1-2 years to make sure they're still putting out the 1.1ml they are supposed to and it looks like they still are.
How do you control the on/off function? Are you using a controller like the apex? I think that would definitely be more than I am willing to spend for the dosing solution.
-
Looks like it's between GHL and the coralbox for me, thanks everyone.
-
I went with individual dosing pumps; in the event of failure, I have one issue vice multiple (potentially). The downside is using up 2-4 relays instead of one that could be a standard outlet and the required space to support multiple pumps.
Are you using the BRS brand? They can't be programmed, right? Just controlled with on/off.
I’ve been using the Coralbox WiFi doser from Reefbreeders to dose Triton and it’s worked well.
This one actually seems fairly good and affordable, thanks for the tip. Did you run into any problems using it?
I have the older version of this and have been running it for almost 8 years. It’s awesome.

I was eyeing that but it seems out of stock on BRS, Thanks for the tip
I like my Kamoer dosser
I'm seeing a lot of people complain about the wifi connectivity, have you experienced this?

I currently have the Jebao dosing pump to dose 3 liquids and want to upgrade to a better, more reliable kind. What are some pumps that you recommend? Looking for a good mix of price/reliability, thank you.

Aren't bobbit worms able to cause permanent numbness via a sting? I'd wear gloves.
E: Can't find other sources besides this article, so I don't know how true that is. https://blogs.scientificamerican.com/running-ponies/eunice-aphroditois-is-rainbow-terrifying/

It's hard to say as the glimpses are so fleeting and from a distance. So I snagged a few frames from the first appearance and put them into this image:
From the looks of things, it's some sort of free swimming hydroid. Not unlike the solitary hydroid shown on this page (but it's from 800m below the surface).
Go about halfway down this page for a diagram that looks similar. Also, check our the video on that page (just below the diagram) and look at the interval from about 38s to 65s for views of the hydroid colony and a close-up of a free swimming one. I'll try to link to the video below.... I'll also embed the diagram ....
Very cool. Have them check this out and see if any match: http://www.wetwebmedia.com/jellyidfaqs.htm

Thank you both for the links, I can't seem to find one that looks exactly alike, but we will try to compare and look again in a bit. I wasn't sure if it was a hydroid because most of them seemed to have really long tentacles and the ones we see don't seem to. If we find any colonies we will also update.

A friend's nano had some weird creatures I had never seen. What are these things? You can see them a bunch of times throughout, and more specifically at :05, 0:46, 0:56, and a bunch between 1:02~1:21.

Haven't had trouble with the starry blenny myself, so I guess I got lucky. How would I go about identifying the turf algae?Sixline will only fight with other fish or simply terrorize them. vicous little monster. The Starry Blenny is also another mean little fish.
flatworm Exit will work, although you might have to do a second treatment in a few weeks to fully eradicate them.
Turf algae could be many different species of algae- need to identify it first.
-
I got a handful of turf algae while ago, and can't seem to get rid of it. I have a starry blenny, foxface, pencil urchin, and emerald crabs, and none of those seem to be going after the algae. Will anything else eat this stuff? My nitrates are around 1ppm, phosphates are around <0.1ppm.
Also trying to get rid of red planaria, it's everywhere. I'm siphoning them out when I can and plan on dosing flatworm exit when I get the population much lower. I was thinking about getting a six line to help lower the population, but how do they do with a McCosker's flasher wrasse? I'm hearing a lot of mixed opinions if they will get along or not. 75G display.

I do like the watchmen, but I'm wondering if they'd stir to much up? I like the ORA Plat Clownfish. And I think I'd like another cleaner shrimp pair.
That's not a bad idea, I do like the fang blennies.
I'm thinking ORA Platinum Pair (They will stick in the anemone, so don't anticipate travel past that)
A pair of McCosker's Flasher Wrasse
A pair of cleaner shrimp
Where are you getting your pair of McCosker? I was told that the male would flash more when in a presence of a female but all of the LFS i asked said it would be too hard to get it.

Not sure if you have seen this video yet or not, I couldn't really see his whole plumbing layout but I am guessing the tank drains down to the refugium and then to the sump via gravity fed so no pumps are needed, am I right?
I haven't seen this particular one, but it does seem like it is gravity fed from the display. I was thinking about just using my media reactor's outlet and sticking that up there, if not just buying a maxijet for a feed line. I figured it would be easier than drilling an extra hole and redoing my plumbing. This definitely looks cleaner, so there's that.
The Neptune ATK has been solid for me.
And it's separate from the neptune system? that's interesting. Thank you for the tip

I would love to turn it into a fuge but i dont know much about plumbing and drilling glass, if you turning yours into one plesae give me some info and take some pics. As for now , im just using a small plastic basket with rocks and macroalgae in the skimmer section. The Red Sea ato resevoir is in the garage lol. Good luck man !
Haha thanks, I'm probably gonna do some research and get it cut by someone else, since I have no idea what I'm doing with power tools. I'll document the process and let you know once I decide to switch over

Tunze 3155 ha never let me down..
Seems like a solid choice from what I've red so far, probably will end up going this route. Thanks for the tip
I just went the same route also on my Red Sea 250 Reefer system, Im dosing kalk in the top off water so i think the float switch and tubing is clogged up or something. I am now using a 5g jug with the Smart ATO that i have laying around, no more filling up the tiny 2g every 1.5 day.
Yeah, I don't but I have the same issue. I've tried fiddling with and removing the small valve and that didn't really seem to help either. Did you end up doing anything with your ATO reservoir or just leave it empty? I've seen a lot of people that turned them into refugiums, was thinking about doing something similar.
-
I have a red sea 350 (75gal) and the built in ATO has always been giving me trouble, almost never keeping up with the rate of evaporation. I'm thinking of just swapping it out to a 5 gallon jug and an ATO, any tips/recommendations on which ATO to get?
-
That sounds like an oddly complicated solution to a relatively easy problem.
Go to Michaels and get you some plastic stitching canvas. I used those to make these pod condos in my old 150. Used to take them and rotate them back and forth from the sump to the DT.
Oh that's a great idea, thanks for the tip. Did you have a refugium or dose phyto to help them grow? Or just let them do their own thing
-
I think that'll be good.
On another note, what do you think about using chaeto reactors in place of a refugium for pods? Getting a lot of mixed feedback on it.
Green Hair or Turf Algae? + Treatment question
in General Discussion
I'd say it holds it's pretty clumped up even out of water but it's not firm or anything. I tried manual removal early on but now it's basically everywhere on the rocks so that might be too hard. I'll look up vibrant, thanks for the suggestion
I have 6 decent sized ones in my 75G but they don't seem to eat it as far as I can tell, at least not very much. I'm thinking about adding some fuzzy chitons and more turbo snails and seeing if that helps
