  1. I tried spot feeding my acro's and monti's with reef frenzy in the past. They secreted a lot of slime  shortly after the feeding which lead me to believe it was pissing them off so I stopped. Watching these vids in high def makes me want to try again. lol

  2. Pipe dope works great to seal big threaded seals - a lot better than teflon tape in my experience. I use Oatey's great white pipe joint compound. I'm fine with teflon tape for the small threaded joints, but I've had more success (less leaking) with pipe dope on the big ones like the 1-1/2" and 2" threaded joints from my return pumps.

What if you see an oily film on top of the water after using pipe dope to seal? you think that water is still safe to use?

  3. What kind of unit do you have? I read online that colder temps can cause a slow flow rate through your membranes. When the units at work clog up, we run a flush to remove trapped air and clean out the system.

  4. the only way to prove that tumbling does something different than non-tumbling is to set up 2 identical systems side by side and see what tumbling vs non gets.

The previous post is anecdotal evidence at best.

I agree that side by side comparison is the best way to test if tumbling makes a difference. I am just noting that when I had very little/ restricted flow, there was no difference in my skimmate for 2-3 months. When I increased the flow and the pellets began to tumble, within days, there was a noticeable difference in what my skimmer was taking out. Once again, it might be "anecdotal" evidence, but it's enough evidence for me to believe a little tumbling helps vs. no tumble at all.

  5. I've been running bp's on my tank for about 8 months now with a Phosban 550 retrofitted. I had issues trying to get the pellets to tumble for the first 2-3 months. To get it to tumble better, I streamlined the tubes and minimized the restricted flow by adding a stronger pump. I have noticed my skimmer taking out some nasty gunk as well as an improvement in water clarity once it have better tumbling.

  6. I searched acid bath liverock on youtube and followed accordingly. Let the rocks sit in the bath til it stops bubbling and slowly pour baking soda in to help neutralize the acid. If your interested in picking up the buffers and calcium, I can give you the rest of my acid as well. It's a little more than half a bottle.
