Wonder if you could get some self leveling compound to pour in the middle of it now that it's leveled all over so you wouldn't have to worry about the shims getting loose.  Or maybe some sanded grout or thinset shoved under the bottom 2x4's.

  2. Still just feeding the cleanup crew here.  The hair algae all went away on its own.  Coralline has started on powerheads and other areas so I assume that's what is happening.  I am still getting a layer of green cyano on all of the sand because I have very little stirring of it that happens.  As I add livestock and things to move it around a little more I bet that will subside.

The big news in our house is that I'm now ready for fish.  I got a Clearview lid delivered today made by Adam (formerly Artfully Acrylic).  It fits absolutely perfectly with about a 1/16" gap on both sides of the frame, so I don't have to worry about jumpers (or nerite snails) on the floor.  It even has a cutout for the overflow box top that still lets me access it.  I'm really happy with how it turned out.

  3. Also for the raffle, we have two 2-packs of 120 gram jars of Maxspect Professional Coral Putty. That's a $40 value. A 100% reef safe Coralline Algae Colored Coral Putty that can be used underwater. This two-part silicone-based coral putty cures in 3 minutes. No foul odor, will not cloud the water, and will not cause the protein skimmer to overflow. Can be used for both marine and freshwater aquariums. The color of the putty allows it to blend in with its surroundings making it easier to hide than other forms of adhesives used in aquariums. It is recommended to use a minimal amount since most corals will grow over the adhesive in a matter of weeks.

    You almost don't need fish!

Right! I kind of don't miss them yet. It's more casual to just feed the cleanup crew.

Just for my own reference I started seeing coralline algae on the plumbing Tuesday. It has been growing on the rocks for a while which came in with it already.

I'm not taking heroic measures against hair algae yet a side from physical removal in spots. In my experience once coralline grows on an area it pushes out the hair algae.

  6. Brand new hitchhiker today almost 2 months into the rocks.  I found a small black urchin just hanging out on the rocks.

So I've had some issues with the aquacultured rock which was fairly dense and kind of full of gorilla crabs (2 so far in just 30 pounds total of rock) and mantis shrimp (2 so far), but it is honestly really fun to see new stuff popping up.  Snails I didn't add, porcelain crabs, bristleworms, limpets, macroalgae (seems like feather caluerpa) in both fuge and in main tank, and now a small black urchin.

  7. The main issues I had with tiger tails was that they would move the sand through their guts in large quantity and leave piles where it came out and they split fairly often I my tank. I ended up with 4 of them.

  8. I hope lots of people use it right away on release in April so we hear lots of experiences good or bad.  Live Aquaria is owned by Petco now, right?  We have known the folks there for a long time, and it seems like if they put out something with their name on it we should be able to trust it, assuming those people are still in charge.

In April, Live Aquaria is going to start selling this as "Proto Pro" that asserts reef safe ich treatment in a full reef.  I'm interested in seeing early reviews.  I would likely not use it in a full reef, but if it worked well in QT that would already be great.  Copper is pretty harsh and prazi doesn't last long enough to achieve consistent treatment concentrations from what I've read.

  10. I admire you for sticking to it through the various issues.  Such a large tank is a big beast to steer once it gets off track.  So many moving pieces.  Fingers crossed that the recent additions to the controllers and setup will get it working well.

Reading back through the thread, on the heater power front, I ended up making a little box with a solid state relay that uses 120V AC on both the control side and the output side.  The control side was wired to a plug that went to the Apex outlet which would switch the SSR on and off.  That way I could have the actual heaters on a dedicated 20A circuit without drawing all of that power through the Apex power bar.
