after I got the evil Starry blenny out of the DT, the powder blue went in. He is SO awesome to watch... he is best buds with my foxface and kole eye. My daughter (yes BRK staff... the extremely LOUD little girl) has named him Little Boy Blue. thanks again.

Cole Alan, born on Monday night, 8lb 3oz. Mommy and baby are doing great!!!

Got the little booger! All I did was leave a huge net on the rock where it sleeps at night. After two days he finally trusted it and went to sleep in the middle of the net. I just had to yank the net up fast. Woot!

Thanks for the powder blue. He is awesome! He has aclimated well in my QT and is eating jans food like a pig. I will move him to my dt as soon as I get this a hole starry blenny out somehow.

So the inverted soda bottle fidnt work. I caught every darn fish but this butthead... any other ideas on getting him out... those of you that saw my build thread know that taking out rocks is not an option.

I just went back through and read through this thread again... You have pretty much built my dream tank there. Its awesome! The black foam must have hit you hard in the wallet, mine is only a 125 gal and I must have spent $100 bucks alone on it. I had to order the Pond foam from amazon, but when I needed more after the rebuild because of the bad silicone, I saw that they had some at BRK too. How stable are the parameters in your tank? I've noticed that mine are extremely stable, I have yet to get a nitrite or nitrate reading, Idk if its just the shear amount of live rock or what... but before I built the foam rock walls my nitrate was always up and down. It also might be the Ev400 skimmer though too, its a little overkill for a 125. Also, how is that dward lionfish you bought from Petco doing?

What kind of tangs do you guys have in stock?

is that a casio calculator watch??? sorry its in focus and hard to tell with just the band shot!
I think its Michael Knights watch bro... "come in Kit... can you read me..."

thanks for the heads up all... looks like I've got a date with a inverted soda bottle, some food, some fishing string, a six pack of beer, a bag of doritos, and a roll of duct tape (just in case).

did not know that starr blennies were like that... hmm, will this eventually stop? Or shall I make him a refugium resident?
-
The faux rock walls are starting to "purple up" nicely, you can see this in the bottom right hand corner. Been five months and I've still yet to get a nitrite or nitrate reading above 0. not complaining about that though. I've been doing 20% water changes every two weeks anyways, just to replace trace elements.

This is what I did on my day off during last Wednesdays massive blizzard . Built a table for my frag tank and refugium and set up the gravity overflow to them.

This started about three days ago... first circle showed up on the foxface.... then the next day one showed up on the yellow eye. Then the next day another showed up on the other side of the foxface, and then another above the last one on the yellow eye. Any thoughts on this? FYI, all water parameters are GTG. The only thing that changed right before this started happening was that I added a 4 to 5 inch Starry Blenny... but I thought those guys are peaceful so I ruled him out. other livestock includes 2 cleaner shrimp, 2 black clowns, and one very small sixline wrasse. they all love to sleep in the cleaner shrimps area together at night, the foxface and yellow eye seem to get along. Their behavior has not changed since this happened either. Is this some sort of parasite, or is something beating these guys up? For size comparison, the yellow eye is only 3" but the foxface is huge... about 7" long.

Wow, thought there would be some black tang defenders coming out of the woodwork lol. guess not.

We were just talking to BRK this past weekend and supposedly these are rarely ever imported into the US. They have one in their display tank.
ya I was there on friday for their weekend sale. I saw the black tang and it is a neat fish... But 500-800 dollar fish? I dont now about that...
-
what exactly makes the Black Tang so pricey? Is it just rarity? Maybe its just me, but they are kinda boring.
-
Here is the way mine works... originally designed by Brian Ward. I've since made a couple of minor adjustments. keep in mind there is also the two return in the top corners of the tank that help complete the turbulant flow.
-
Wow if they look anything like the google images I just looked up, they are beautiful. I hope they go to a nice seasoned veterans tank soon.
-
ya he's doing amazingly now, my new foxface even taught him how to eat off a seaweed clip! Thanks for all the advice everyone.

Picked up a 5"-6" Black Tang yesterday for a very good price.
nice, I didnt see that guy when I went, I must have missed him... When you get him nice and acclimated post us a pic!

ya I thought of that too Dave, what the schematic doesn't show is the ridiculously messy closed loop system, its got four returns all run off of a dart. I've all ready got this thing complicated as heck, I'm trying to find the cheapest/safe/easiest solution, without my wife going bat crap crazy on me for buying another pump. isn't it just as dangerous if you used a pump to get the water from the sump to the frag tank? It still has to have an overflow back to the sump. if the overflow gets clogged, the pump will just keep filling the frag tank up until the sump is empty. I think I will drill the return on the frag tank and use a standard box overflow. hmm, maybe drill two holes, one that is higher than the other incase the lower one gets clogged?
-
Im no expert but in theory it should work (but I never trust HOB overflows). One thought is on the frag tank I would have a larger GPH overflow and not a matching. If the frag tank one gets clogged at all it would turn into a problem.
ya that's what I'm afraid of, though I did run an eshoppes overflow for over a year, and they are pretty well made. I never had a problem with it, but you are right. If it got clogged with something, it would cause a flood.

Well whataya know... the little booger started eating yesterday, and did it again today! I noticed a more "garlicy" smelling chunk of Jan's food then normal yesterday, so when I dumped it in, he started pulling pieces into his mouth and spitting it out, and then started eating some of the pieces. And today he just went nuts and ate a lot! woot! for Jan's food!

quick question about the schematic above. I am thinking about adding the frag tank "red" like this... Does anyone have theirs setup like this using only gravity? That way I don't have to buy another return pump. What do you guys suggest?

Ya 21.5 inches long and we induced 2 weeks early because we new he was gonna be a nice size... For those of you that met me or saw me at the last meeting, I'm the really tall guy (6' 8") so he gets it from me!
