  1. Some times we just need a break from stuff.  Don't worry too much about it, take a few weeks off from the forums and come back when you really feel like you want to.  Hobbies should be fun, if it isnt it may be time for a new hobby.  As far as the forums go, there are so many threads on here that just about everything has been answered, some times I don't post anything because I feel like "thats a quick google search".   But unless it is a very serious thread where someone needs help or they are going to lose all of their livestock, why not keep it light with some jokes?  Unless the jokes derail the thread of course.

  2. So they have been in my DT for a week now (2 firefish, 1 purple firefish).  I didnt see the purple fire fish for the first 4 or 5 days, and basically wrote him off as crab food.  But on days 6 I noticed him pop out of a cave really quick during a feeding.  I guess it is good he is alive, but darn I was looking forward to watching that guy.  I hope he eventually gets over his shyness.  The 2 firefish that were bought from seperate tanks at QR are doing well.  Sometimes they hang out next to eachother at the top of the water column, and sime times they are on opposite sides.  No signs of aggression or anything.  I let you know if it changes.

  3. So the good news is that all of my bubble algae is gone...   The bad news is that the dime sized emerald crab that I put in to control the algae has become FRIGHTENINGLY LARGE!!!  I cannot believe how fast this thing has grown... it is easily 3 or 4 times the size in just a few months.  I am actually scared he will get a hold of a fish.  Should I take him out?  maybe make him a sump critter or something?

  4. How big is your tank? Are the firefish actually a pair or just two single firefish? The purples supposedly are more aggressive than the oranges, so maybe if the oranges make a pair and thus get aggressive to the purple, the purple will be able to put up with them.  The zebra barred dartfish shouldn't factor in with the social issues of the firefish trio (I have 3 scissortail dartfish in my tank).

Its a 120 deep dimension.  I'll let you know how it works out lol.

  5. Nice to see you havent lost any of them.  I am about to bring 2 firefish, 1 purple firefish, and one zebra barred dartfish out of QT this weekend.  So far in the QT they have gotten along just fine... Whats weird though is that one of the firefish likes to hang out with the purple firefish, and the other firefish and the zebra are loners.  Should be interesting to see what they do once I put them in the DT.

  6. I've gotten a few fish from this Petco.  Just go on the days the fish are delivered (Tuesday I believe) so they arent exposed to their horrible systems for too long, and more importantly you must QT, QT, QT, QT, QT ALL LIVING THINGS!!!

  7. I saw the ich post in the beginners forum, and it reminded me that I no longer have ich!  I guess this hypo thing worked...  Now I just need to make sure everything goes through 4 weeks of medicated QT before it enters my system.  It is hard to do when you have a wife and daughter who are constantly hounding you about adding your new fish to the "big" tank.  I have to keep reminding them about the fish we lost do to ich last year.  I still don't know if it was worth the pain in the A that this was...

  8. Rubbish.  I'm glad you didn't try this yourself Enkay and that you had me build your tank for you instead ;)  For large display tanks, the methods used in this guys video set will result in a generous helping of bubbles in your seams (looks ugly), but more importantly....his method doesn't produce a very strong bond between the panels (not enough contact time and not 100% solvent coverage).  That can be risky down the line.  For much smaller tanks like a small sump or an ATO Box these methods will almost certainly work if you put in the efforts to get the pieces all right.

If you want cleaner and much stronger seams then as OhaverD said, pins method is your best route when using a solvent based bonding process.

Yes and as someone who has had you (Adam) build me a sump, and have also gone through the learning process of it (just for fun mostly).  I will always just recommend that someone goes to Adam, rather than learn how to do it themselves lol.  Its too much time, effort, and skill, not to mention the countless dollars it takes to aquire the proper tools.  But that being said, it was fun learning how to do it.

  9. Oh ya, the final... and most important thing I learned was that you need an EXTREMELY flat surface to work on.  Obviously if you are making smaller things its not so important.  But if you are making 4' to 6' tanks, It makes things much easier.

  10. Thank you all for the advice! If I tried to clean the edges with no router what's the sanding / planer recommendation?

I will probably order precut... But I will probably end up getting a router.. I've always used my dremel and dremel trip for routing so never needed a dedicated one... But I like the idea of playing around with this.. It's finicky and requires practice but not overly complicated!

The reef central thread is crazy with info!

a planer I here is better for edges than a router, but way more expensive.  Just CL yourself a decent router, and google good router bits for acrylic.  I tend to forget details like router bit types after I've made my purchase...

  11. sounds like you are covering all the bases with the research.  I made sure I read everything I needed to know before gathering all of the necessary tools.  You'll need a table saw with a high tooth count blade for acrylic, a good router for edging.  You can get away with the razor blade method for doing your edges, as long as its a smaller size box that you are making, but since my end game for learning how to do this was a 100gal 8' long frag tank, I opted for the router.  and most importantly, get scraps for practice, you'll want to practice the pins method a few times before "going for it".

  12. Your setup should have a 1 inch nozzle upgrade.

Its a special larger spray nozzle made for greg carroll

     that AQUA C makes.

Send him a email i think i paid 10.00 for one.

A 1000/2000 or 400 should have one in my experience.

The hose end on a regular is 3/4 inch the hose end on the upgrade

     is 1 inch.

    nice, I'll look into that

  13. welp, apparently the spray injector doesn't work very well if there are cerith snails stuck in it... go figure  ...  I dislodged them and now its running like a champ again!  Thanks for the help!

Do you have the 1inch nozzle if not you should get a few.

A mag 24 will allow you to run the 400 with a very high water level

     if you like.

Try running it 2 inches from the cup you will be surprised how it

functions at that water level.......very stable foam head.

what is the "1inch nozzle"?  is that the spray injector?  And where does one buy these?

  14. How old is the impeller in your feed pump?  I had an EV 120 and finally had to give up on it, after months of fighting with it I just couldn't sit there for hours on end trying to get it to trim out and work properly.  There isn't really a lot of maintenance to do on the injector, but you may want to check the pump and clean it.  Depending on how old the pump is, you might want to replace the impeller.

The Mag 24 is only 6 months old...  how often should one replace the impeller?

The number one problem with AquaC skimmers are clogged injectors due to dirty and salt build up. Take it out and give a a good vinegar soak and clean it with a toothbrush. Works every time for me when I had them.

Thanks, I'll do that!  Hopefully that will be the root of the problem.

  15. I've been scanning the intranetz for some help with my EV 400 but I have come up empty.  I know how to operate it, and the skimmer has been running great for about 6 months or so, but now all of a sudden I'm having a hard time getting it to stay at the proper water level, and it isnt creating bubbles up the tube any longer.  What are the steps I should take to try to fix the issue?  Do you think this is probably just routine maintenance that needs to be done to the pump or something?  Its a mag 24 plumbed with a ball valve.

what are the steps I should take for maintenance on a spray injector?

off hand I was going to viniger bath the pump, but is there anything in the EV 400 that needs to be checked, like the spray injector?

    thanks for any help.
