MH solves it all.

Looks like a limpet or a cowrie of some sort. The hard part is the shell and the soft part is the mantle.

I went to Marine Scene today but they didn't have any solution so I asked for a sample of their salt water. It read 1.025 on their pinpoint controller so when I took it home, I found out my meter was off by .02. After calibrating it to their solution, I used my RODI water and it was at about 0. So it seems like distill/RODI water works too.
Now I have to get my tank from 1.023 to 1.025.
Just make your next water change saltier than usual. For what it's worth, my salinity is usually around 1.027-1.029.

In my experience, the refractometer is within .001 of a swing type hydrometer. I use distilled water to calibrate it and between the 2 of them, I'm fairly certain that the salinity is in the range of 1.026-1.028 on all my tanks. That kind of fluctuation is minor and not really of concern. I'm sure there are more accurate ways to measure salinity- a salinity meter comes to mind. If you really need to be that accurate, you'd be better off with the meter.

I calibrate mine with distilled water. That is the only calibration fluid that I am aware of.

Armor-all cleanser, then a nice wax or polish. Wipe down once a week till wax wears off.

Why the need for 0 nitrates?

Caulerpa is a single celled algae, not a macroalgae.

I used to dose Lugols solution back in the day for Fiji Yellow leathers to brighten their color.

I use a Home Depot 42w CF Floodlight fixture that is 6500K. It was about $40. Works like a charm.

LMK if you catch it. I keep them in my 'fuge.

I've heard bad things about Blueline bulbs from a LFS- don't go there.

I've decided to go for the least amount of heat for the most amount of light: 150w 14k.
Now I know whom to ask for direct questions about thermodynamics.
Thanks.

How fast does your chaeto or other macroalgae grow? I'm getting 12" of growth every week from Dragons Breath. It outgrows anything that I have including chaeto. I would like to say that this is better than chaeto for nutrient export. Anyone have any info on this?

Why don't you just buy an American Marine Pinpoint ph monitor. There is no equal. Easy to use, will pay for itself if you use chemical based kits over a years' time.
-
maybe it's just new tank syndrome. add 1 or 2 fish to a 12 gallon tank-MAX.

good to hear that someone was home before it got out of control. when I worked at Fox Mill Pets back in the day, we had a similar situation while the store was closed. when we opened the next morning, the whole tank had shattered and all the livestock was dead.
I can't help but ask- Fish for dinner tonight?

Why not just CYA and get a joist brace.
-
Well? Did it work? how well? what is it called? If yes to the first ? I need to get it.
I'll be doing it this weekend. If it works, do you want me to repair yours?

I'll be placing a marinedepot order this week- if you want to add some to the order...

In that size of tank, you might do better with cardinals or chromis rather than anthias.
