  1. I went to Marine Scene today but they didn't have any solution so I asked for a sample of their salt water. It read 1.025 on their pinpoint controller so when I took it home, I found out my meter was off by .02. After calibrating it to their solution, I used my RODI water and it was at about 0. So it seems like distill/RODI water works too.

Now I have to get my tank from 1.023 to 1.025.

Just make your next water change saltier than usual. For what it's worth, my salinity is usually around 1.027-1.029.

  2. In my experience, the refractometer is within .001 of a swing type hydrometer. I use distilled water to calibrate it and between the 2 of them, I'm fairly certain that the salinity is in the range of 1.026-1.028 on all my tanks. That kind of fluctuation is minor and not really of concern. I'm sure there are more accurate ways to measure salinity- a salinity meter comes to mind. If you really need to be that accurate, you'd be better off with the meter.

  3. How fast does your chaeto or other macroalgae grow? I'm getting 12" of growth every week from Dragons Breath. It outgrows anything that I have including chaeto. I would like to say that this is better than chaeto for nutrient export. Anyone have any info on this?

  4. good to hear that someone was home before it got out of control. when I worked at Fox Mill Pets back in the day, we had a similar situation while the store was closed. when we opened the next morning, the whole tank had shattered and all the livestock was dead.

I can't help but ask- Fish for dinner tonight?
