  1. Its cheap, but does have sharp edged pieces of quartz. I don't think you should use it in your display. BRK has a good price on CaribSea sand, you're probably better to pay the price for good sand in the display.
  2. I think you are right. There are some sharp pieces that appear to be quartz, IMO. I'll try to post a pic of the bag, stand by.
  3. The bag does contain a silica warning disclaimer. I did a side by side comparison with CaribSea Aragonite sand. The CaribSea fizzes more but the Southern States sand is fizzing as well. My CaribSea sand is much finer grain so that may account for some of the difference. Either way, it may be good enough for a RDSB set-up.
  4. Don't know if anyone is interested, but I was at the Manassas Southern States Coop store today and found that they have a pallet of Oldcastle white playsand for $3.79/bag. I bought some and did the vinegar test on the sand. It definitely fizzes, but does have some sharp edged pieces. Anyway, just thought I'd pass on the info if anyone needs sand.
  5. Sorry about the transposition! That is what I get for posting so late at night.
  6. I know this won't come as much of a surprise to most WAMAS members, but I just wanted to let everyone know what a great experience I recently had at Blue Ribbon Kio. I bought a Reeflo pump from John and the pump had a slight problem (the seam on the volute was leaking). I took the pump back to BRK and John said that it would probably be faster for me to deal directly with Reeflo, but in the mean time John offered to let me take a used Reeflo pump home to use until the issue with my pump was resolved. I think it is pretty awesome of John. Reeflo send the new volute via Second Day shipping and the issue was quickly corrected. This is the very reason I prefer to buy from BRK, you can't get that kind of service from vendors on the internet. And by the way, BRK's price on Reeflo pumps is the same as Marine Depot, plus local service. Thanks again to BRK!
  7. I have one and would be glad to help, any chance you could drive to Gainesville with it. I live about 5 miles from BRK.
  8. Thanks for the responses.
  9. I was looking at getting a TDS meter and wonder how many reef keepers have one and regularly use it?
  10. I acclimated two mollies to keep my quarantine tank active. It was very easy, I dripped them for 8 hours. They never seemed stressed at all and did great.
  11. John, Do you still sell the Aquahub auto top off kit? If so how much is it? I would like the deluxe 3 switch version. Thanks
  12. Hello WAMAS, I recently joined after keeping a 75 gallon reef tank for a little more than one year. Lots of great information and discussion here on your site. I just bought a 90 gallon from another WAMAS member that I am now getting ready to set up. I have a new skimmer on its way and new T5 6x54w fixture. I also bought a overflow kit from glass-holes.com and drilled my 90, it was super easy. I'm also going to drill my 75 and use it for a sump. My question is this, I want to do a RDSB in a Rubbermaid tub, has anyone used one long enough to say that it really works? What flow rate is best? Anthony Calfo seems to say that it should be as high a rate as possible without washing the sand. What do you all think? Thanks so much.
