  1. You can always ralph through your regulator (talk about feeding the reef! LOL). Once you are in the water, seasickness almost ALWAYS goes away quickly. No more nasty bouncing motion. dive dive dive! s
  2. Reef Keeping intro by Drs. Foster & Smith staff A quick flip though these pages had quite a bit of good information. Nice overall presentation of the issues. Does not cover advanced stuff like dosing Kalk or calcium reactors, but other stuff on general setup and responsibilities is quite good. s
  3. I would like to know how these boogers figure out that there IS an overflow there and that it is a safe place to jump to. They seem smart enough to avoid carpet surfing, so HOW do they do it? sheesh.. s ???
  4. Well now... I thought I had finally killed my first fish. Turns out the little bugger is in my overflow. It is so dense w/stuff that it is like a baby refugium. I just noticed his little neon head sticking out of a hole in the coraline algae cover. Now then. How do I get this little devil back into the main tank? How do I keep him out of the overflow? Why did he go there in the first place? Jump? Fun? a new adventure? :p s
  5. I use a Mag7 for the return on my 90G system. Decent flow from that pump. Not a pressure rated pump, so it does not deal well with back pressure or a lot of head. I find I definately have to clean it every couple months to avoid the impeller freezing up. I had an incident where I ignored it for about 10 months and suddenly, no pump working. Glad I had an extra impeller on hand. good pump. just pay attention to it now and again. s
  6. 90 Gallon main system 20 Gallons in a 32G sump s sph: new sump is bigger w/fuge in it.
  7. We often measure the success of this club by the size of its membership roster and the attendance at the meetings. I am curious about a different measure... How many gallons of seawater is this club managing as a whole? Is it growing, shrinking? I think we will be surprised at the total volume of seawater we are supporting in our hobby activities! Please post the ratings of your tanks/systems so we can start to tally it up! Club total gallons: 12530 Number of members reporting: 60 - through bededog Periodically will update as people post. Steve To keep the length of this post down please post only if you are adding to the count, all comment posts will be deleted Nathan
  8. Attached here for review is a PDF'd clean copy with no highlighted changes of the new bylaws. Steve
  9. Here is a clean copy of the current bylaws in PDF for those that want them. Steve
  10. Per the discussion in the Member Section in the thread on Bylaws changes, some changes are proposed for tomorrow's meeting. They have been reviewed by the Board through multiple telecons. Attached here for review is a PDF version with changes highlighted for the new bylaws. Steve
  11. Do you have any Live Rock or Live Sand in this system? If not, it will work but you will have to watch your Nitrate levels, as they will grow unless you take action. In particular, lots of water changes. Are you considering a refugium? If yes, you can put the LR/LS there and leave your main display rather empty if you really want to... s
  12. You are using a Red Sea Marine Lab, right? My experience with that Ammonia test is that the color gradation from yellow to green is very hard to read. How green is that yellow? That said, I found you must read it on time. They say 15 mins for the test to develop, that's when you should read it. Otherwise, color seems to keep changing. I found that if the ammonia looks to be a zero, and your nitrite/nitrate tests are zero, you are very likely at a zero for the ammonia. I have shifted to FasTest for Ammonia/Nitrite/Nitrate 'cuz I think they are easier to read. You might try a this or the Salifert for Ammonia if you are concerned. s
  13. The Board has also approved the change of status for WAMAS to become a section 501c3 corporation. This enhances our ability to seek tax deductible donations and improves access to Press and other public service activites.
  14. Further work is being done to define better the roles and responsibilities of each of the officers of the corporation. To that end, each position description in the bylaws includes "..and such other duties as from time to time may be assigned to him/her by the board." As we move forward, more infomation on these job descriptions will be posted, but here is a set of one liners that cover clarification of roles/responsiblities as currently being discussed/understood/executed by the members of the board:
  15. In honor of all work done by our past presidents, the following position has been approved by the board and added to the bylaws:
  16. Original language of Article V: The approved changes by the board encompass Students, Educators and updated Vendor status class, and changes to dues rates.
  17. As approved by the Board, this is a new position defined as a officer of the corporation to bring the voting members of the Board to 5 members.
  18. Current language: Fixed typo, added educational society. Changes highlighted in bold italics:
  19. The Board of Directors for WAMAS has been meeting frequently and discussing changes to the bylaws of the corporation. This has involved a lot of work by: Michael Gerdes, President Glenn Rosenbluth, Vice President Tamie DeWitt, Secretary Scott Blackburn, Treasurer Steve Howard, PR director Craig Kuhn, Membership Tom Sasala, Webmaster Nathan Gaub, Web content Many thanks to all who contributed so much time to make this progress happen. Per votes of the board, the following changes to the WAMAS corporation's bylaws have been approved. These changes are being presented here to the membership in preparation for our Winter Meeting this Saturday, 17.Jan.2004. The officers of WAMAS are open to any and all discussion on these approved changes at this meeting. A short presentation will be made about these changes as well as handouts for the membership's review. A voice vote will be taken of the membership to confirm approval of these changes by the membership present at the meeting. --------------------------------- Currently, the Board of Directors for WAMAS is comprised of four positions on the Board. These are: President Vice President Secretary Treasurer The board has now expanded to include five voting members on the board. They are: President Vice President Secretary Treasurer Membership Director This solves tie votes and enables the board to have a quorum more easily by having five positions, not four. Each of the bylaws changes will be presented here as an individual posting.
  20. Flower Horn fish at Tropical paradise Aquariums Never heard of them. What do they eat? Who wants to spend >$900 for a fish? Zowie! Are they reef safe? oy. What's so cool about these guys that they fetch so much?
  21. To clarify, ReefMon is talking about Orange Line's Vienna Metro stop. Yeah, that makes sense. Any takers? s

Many LFS systems do not run deep sand beds w/live rock in their displays. Imagine trying to chase down a fish/shrimp/... in LR when a customer is saying "I want THAT one". Instead, they tend to run mechanical filtration systems. At least that's what I see most of. They have their corals and stuff on egg crate material to make it easier to pick up, move, etc. In home based reef systems, we are trying to achieve a balanced ecosystem and we do not really need to try to get stuff out of our tanks. The goal is to have stuff growing so well it out-grows the tank and you have to prune it back! That said, mechanical filtration is not as attractive/necessary at home. s
  23. In other words, if he doesn't like it, he throws up? Interesting. Anemone condition I understand. I did not know they would puke if they didn't like what they ate... s
  24. Still, your system has a lot of cool stuff in it. Nice work...
