  1. Michael,

I have couple of observations from my own tank.

    1. Check for acro/monti eating nudis. Acro eating nudis are transparent and are not easily observed. You may want to remove the acros and dip it in the Lugol Iodine solution and see if any nudies are present. The monti eating nudies as you know are white and more readily observed but they are small and like to hide so you again have to take them out and inspect them and even dip them in the Lugol solution.

    2. Maybe you have direct current toward those acros that are dying at the tips.

    3. Alk/Cal level is again very critical, especially the level of Alk at 14. May cause RTN or STN.

    4. I have read about low mg level may cause RTN or STN but I don't know if there is any concrete evidence of that. I have never dosed mg personally.

I don't think the change of salt have anything to do with it, although you never know and can't say for sure, but I doubt it.

  2. Jacob,

I would imagine the "black box" is the container that holds the ballasts. It is probably the Hamilton light setup. From the sound of it it has three MH and a VHO setup all together with a reflector.

The pins are the connectors from the light sockets to the ballasts.

From what you are describing, one of the MH ballast is bad. Just make sure it is not the VHO connection.

    Pic would be helpful.

  3. I actually never had any problems with becketts being dirty except for the tiny snails that get stuck in there and I would have to get them out. I soaked it once and saw that there wasn't that much to clean up except as I said earlier for the small snails. I put a sponge filter at the inlet and that helped a great deal with the snails. I don't know what kind of junk you are cleaning out of your beckett but if the snails are the problems, you may want to try that.

I now have a down draft skimmer. I like it much better than the beckett style skimmer. Works well and much less maintenance.

  4. Saturdays are never good for me for it is Sabbath for me. Usually Sundays are good but not this Sunday. My son's graduation. I am home in the day time during the week.

Whenever you are ready, come on by. :)

  5. I broke down my prop tank and I got some stuff I'd like to get rid of.

If you are starting and don't have much you can stop by and get some stuff like xenias, mushrooms, polyps, monti digis and things. Nothing to drive far for but if you live around me or happen to be around my area stop by and pick up some stuff. They are small but I hate to just throw these things away.

    I live in Addelphi, MD.

  6. Well, you CAN have too much light. Not everything requires or likes too much light. You can kill corals with too much light, even SPSs.

What are you keeping in your tank? if you have or intend to keep SPS, then it's not too much light but if you have mushrooms, zoos and LPSs it may be bit much.

#1 - No, 110 is fine. Again, depends.

#2 - Yes. It wil destroy the bulbs and the ballasts.

#3 - Either is good. I suggest either egg crate or put a timer on so that it can go on and off every hour or so and gradually increase the phototime over next two weeks.

The bigger tank issue, I can't help you there. You are on your own on that one. :)
