Guest Rileyporter September 19, 2006 September 19, 2006 On my new tank setup I am just getting it up and running. Its been up for about 2 months and is starting to look better. The only real life is snails and hermits in the tank right now. The question is it looks like there is ALOT of snail or crab crap on the floor. I have nice southbound sand but its mucking it up. What is the best way to get rid of this stuff? A sifting star? Thanks for the help guys, Riley
rrubberbandman September 19, 2006 September 19, 2006 Riley, snAIL dung is very small and blows away in the current.......crab dung i dunno.......aim one of your powerheads towards the sand......do you have nassarius snails? Bryan
Caribbean Jake September 19, 2006 September 19, 2006 be careful with sand shifting starfish, they will eat your snails... specially the thorn sand shifting starfish. You may want to add nassarius and nerites together with cerits, they usually help clean up all the dump. Also make sure you have a good population of bristtle worms, they work the same way. Jacob
Rascal September 19, 2006 September 19, 2006 Ditto on the nassarius - they are awesome; and the caution re: sand-sifting stars - they eat microfuana; and making sure you have enough current to keep detritus in suspension rather than settling. This last can be a difficult balance to reach with a DSB I know -- too much and your sand blows all over the place. Cucumbers also work great. As for worms, if you think you might need more consider an order from www.ipsf.com. Probably not necessary w/ live rock + time but doesn't hurt either.
steveoutlaw September 19, 2006 September 19, 2006 A good mix of snails and hermits is most important. You could add burrowing inverts that will stir up the sand be slowly like horseshoe crabs and conchs. Before you add anything, make sure they are safe to add with the existing contents of your tank.
dschflier September 19, 2006 September 19, 2006 You need to add a comode so they have a place to crap. dont forget the toilet paper. That is why corals are so good, no crap to worry about
