Is it safe to put the giant 12" conch shells(the ones you can "hear" the ocean in) into tanks?  I was thinking about putting one in my tank and sticking a little rock with a xenia frag in it so that they grow out of it and get some algae on the outside an what not.

Yes they are fine.  I have a smaller one in my nano tank that the mated pair of coral banded shrimp make a home.  Just make sure it is clean before putting it in there.

I was able to bring a 14 incher back from turks and caicos when we went diving for conchs, they told me to bleach it to kill off all the dying matter so it would not smell.  I would be cautious to put one in a tank that was bought from a store, cause they might use bleach also and when put into a tank it might leach out into the water.  Just a thought.

A good soak for a few days in old tank water is a sure bet that all will be okay.

I got one in Aruba, it is sitting on the toilet tank!
