Guest clownfish4 May 31, 2004 Share May 31, 2004 Is it safe to put the giant 12" conch shells(the ones you can "hear" the ocean in) into tanks? I was thinking about putting one in my tank and sticking a little rock with a xenia frag in it so that they grow out of it and get some algae on the outside an what not. michaelg May 31, 2004 Share May 31, 2004 Yes they are fine. I have a smaller one in my nano tank that the mated pair of coral banded shrimp make a home. Just make sure it is clean before putting it in there.
Tang-away June 1, 2004 Share June 1, 2004 I was able to bring a 14 incher back from turks and caicos when we went diving for conchs, they told me to bleach it to kill off all the dying matter so it would not smell. I would be cautious to put one in a tank that was bought from a store, cause they might use bleach also and when put into a tank it might leach out into the water. Just a thought. Grav June 2, 2004 Share June 2, 2004 A good soak for a few days in old tank water is a sure bet that all will be okay. I got one in Aruba, it is sitting on the toilet tank!
