I was first introduced to Mrs. Wages Pickling Lime by a local reefer. I tried to do a search on some forums on directives for its use but I couldn't find anything in depth. Could someone point me to a link or direct me on the following:

Specific Brand (knowing what to look for)

Where to get it

Dosages (dissolve in vinigar? how many tsp/gallon?)

Effectiveness is it in comparison to leading vendors (Kent etc)

Its affect on pH in general

Thanks.

read the pinned thread in this column- Kalkwasser, everything you wanted to know.  FWIW, Steve had issues with Mrs. Wages.  I have always used Ball's pickling lime, so can't make any direct comment.

Mrs Wages is less fine than Balls and it does not disolve as well. It also seems to raise PO4 levels (this is a problem I don't have with Balls)

I us Balls

mix

2 tblsp Balls

1tsp white vineger

1 cup fresh water

stir for a min then add to 1 gal make up water

do not add other additives to this water as the calcium in the mix will bond to them and render the useless.

Add to tank in strong current, or add to return pump intake area in sump The first few times you add it you will get some clouding of the water. This is from the calcium bonding to the phosphates in your water . After you use it you will see a big drop in those levels.

I have been using this stuff for years without any issues

Phosphate levels? and what other levels drop (if any)?

Safeway, in the baking aisle (sugar, flour, etc)

Have you found it in Giant as well?

Thanks for the info guys.

Look at Kalkawasser in the sticky on this board. Use pickling lime just as you would Kalkawasser.
