gudgreef April 28, 2004 April 28, 2004 I know, I know, "you can't have too much light". I am going from 260W of PC's over a 55g to 2x250MH + 2x110VHO!! Question 1-Should I have bought a lower wattage VHO? #2-Will running lower wattage bulbs on MH ballast destroy the bulb? #3-What is the best way to phase in new lights-shorter photoperiod-some type of filter-both?? So far my suggestion of "I need a bigger tank" still isn't going over too well scry]]
chideloh April 28, 2004 April 28, 2004 Well, you CAN have too much light. Not everything requires or likes too much light. You can kill corals with too much light, even SPSs. What are you keeping in your tank? if you have or intend to keep SPS, then it's not too much light but if you have mushrooms, zoos and LPSs it may be bit much. #1 - No, 110 is fine. Again, depends. #2 - Yes. It wil destroy the bulbs and the ballasts. #3 - Either is good. I suggest either egg crate or put a timer on so that it can go on and off every hour or so and gradually increase the phototime over next two weeks. The bigger tank issue, I can't help you there. You are on your own on that one. HTH
HowardofNOVA April 30, 2004 April 30, 2004 HTH, I was reading the other day that sun light is about 115,000 to 120,000 Watts, or something like that. I think you got a little lee way there, but then again, everyone/thing has different needs
Guest ssaldana April 30, 2004 April 30, 2004 115,000-120,000w bulb suspended at 150 million km to the surface of the water. Thats a long way.
Guest cjm033 May 1, 2004 May 1, 2004 i dont think theres such thing as too much light. because if oyur tank has caves and such you can keep the lower light corals under those. i think its all how u manage heat and adjusting corals to the light that matters mainly,Chris
