thakki March 31, 2016 Share March 31, 2016 Came across this article today...very sad news...seems like raising temperatures caused by global warming is the culprit...here is a link to one of the articles...just google for more info. http://www.foxnews.com/science/2016/03/30/great-barrier-reef-hit-by-widespread-coral-bleaching.html?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+foxnews%2Fscitech+%28Internal+-+SciTech+-+Mixed%
Squishie89 March 31, 2016 Share March 31, 2016 It makes me even more glad I went when I did. Very sad indeed. Here is one of my favorite photos from my trip; all those little blue spots are fish (I think blue chromis). The amount of life there is astounding, it will be horrible if it dies. Keraxis March 31, 2016 Share March 31, 2016 (edited) Actually they kind of contradicted themselves. They want to blame it on Global warming because its easy. If you read other articles they mention this bleaching is happening in areas with alot of cloud cover also which have been cooler. Its very wide spread and not just areas getting blasted by sun light. They are dredging a new canal... that could be causing some of this. They also have excessive run off which we know because of the crown of thorns star fish problem they are having. I would not pin this on any one event especially since the way its happening. Its skipping reef along the way... They have also had alot of storms latly Edited March 31, 2016 by Keraxis
gws3 April 7, 2016 Share April 7, 2016 I was reading in one article that coral reefs that had bleached badly in 1998 had come back to life by 2005 because the corals had maintained small polyps that were able to recolonize the skeleton. They were calling it the phoenix effect. So while it's very depressing how bad the bleaching is this year, it seems we have underestimated how resilient the corals can be and that the ecosystem can re-establish itself relatively quickly. JeffG93 April 20, 2016 Share April 20, 2016 http://www.iflscience.com/plants-and-animals/great-barrier-reef-half-dead-93-percent-bleached 50% already dead, 93% bleached. Because, you know, global climate change is a conspiracy. Sigh.

What are the water perimeters in the ponding areas? How does this compare to the bleaching in 98? What were the parameters of the water in 98. What kind of weather are they having in the area... more storms... less storms... bigger storms? Not much of a scientific article if you ask me. If this is truly being causes by us.. the reefs are done. We cant stop it. By the time we could 100% of reef will be gone. If they had said "50% bleached" I would have been shocked but 93% is beyond sad. Regardless of the global warming issue, the cause is definitely humankind's doing. Keraxis May 18, 2016 Share May 18, 2016 (edited) If they had said "50% bleached" I would have been shocked but 93% is beyond sad. Regardless of the global warming issue, the cause is definitely humankind's doing. Thats projection though. We dont actually know the cause because they just say global warming.. What data points are there... what chemical analysis was done of the surrounding water... what weather was there. what was the suns activity at the time.. Why did some bleach while other did not. I look at things from a scientific stand point and global warming is not approached that way. Theres a reason non of the models actually pass the scientific method. THey cant because they fill in to many gaps along the way and there are not enough hard data points. In the end.. there is to much money and incentive to reach the conclusion they want to the tune of 800 billion a year. I suppose we should be glad that have been wrong.. We would be underwater right now if they were right. Edited May 18, 2016 by Keraxis

22bfan June 1, 2016 Share June 1, 2016 Ive seen videos of acroproa on the Great Barrier Reef that actually come out of the water during tide changes and get baked by the sun. They secrete a snotty slime to protect themselves after retracting polyps. This happens most every day. These creatures are incredibly resilient. Whatever is causing this bleaching, i have a hard time believing its just a matter of water temp change.
