Rob A July 18, 2014 Share July 18, 2014 I caught this fish in a net along with a jellyfish in the surf in North Carolina. I was pretty excited because it is a lot different than the minnow looking things that were swimming around. It was still swimming a bit but I don't know if the jellyfish damaged it or not because this morning it has died. I was hoping to bring it home and put it in a tank... It was only about an inch long. I assume it's a triggerfish larvae/fry? Baby Queen triggerfish?

Rob A July 18, 2014 Author Share July 18, 2014 Ohhhhh, Filefish! I kept thinking the profile was familiar but all I could come up with was triggerfish. Thanks for the help!

Rob A July 18, 2014 Author Share July 18, 2014 Yeah. I'm kinda bummed. I didn't even see it at first. I saw the jellyfish and scooped it up then saw the fish flopping around. So I wonder if the jellyfish was trying to eat it and maybe stung it.
davelin315 July 18, 2014 Share July 18, 2014 I have caught a lot of those when scooping up clumps of Saragassum, hence their name of Sargassum Filefish. They are also referred to as the Planehead Filefish: http://oceanexplorer.noaa.gov/explorations/03edge/background/sargassum/media/filefish.html
