bqq100 September 9, 2013 September 9, 2013 Anyone ever use one of these LEDs/drivers off of ebay? I don't believe the stated output, but it should still be 2-3x the output of a normal CFL bulb. Wondering if anyone has any experience with them. http://www.ebay.com/itm/30W-Brightest-Driver-AC-85-265V-30W-LED-Cool-White-High-Power-Lamp-Bulb-Chip-/251336549178?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3a84d3633a My stand is really cramped, so I'm looking for a low profile option over the current light clamp I have crammed in there now. I plan on using a video card heatsink which should do fine for 30 watts.
fry_school101 September 10, 2013 September 10, 2013 I used some that look the same on mine and they did well while they worked. I got them from dx.com though instead of ebay. The drivers also look better here with heatsinks. My drivers burnt out after a couple months, but I didn't enclose them which may be the reason. The LEDs put out a LOT of heat. Make sure you check the heatsink to see that the GPU cooler is keeping up before you strap it below your stand.
bqq100 September 11, 2013 Author September 11, 2013 Ya, I'm more worried about the driver more than anything. Now I'm thinking about using the APC line of drivers from meanwell. And for the LEDs I'm back to debating cheap Ebay version vs bridgelux array vs individual Red/RB/White LEDs! Too many choices... For the heatsink, I'm figure a worst case of ~1.2C/W. That would put it at around 60C. Not cool, but below the 85C that I believe is used in datasheets for lifetime specs of the LEDs. But I would definitely test before screwing anything in.
DepT October 9, 2013 October 9, 2013 I used an LED floodlight bulb from Lowes in my fuge. Chaeto and coraline is growing like crazy!
bqq100 October 9, 2013 Author October 9, 2013 I used an LED floodlight bulb from Lowes in my fuge. Chaeto and coraline is growing like crazy! Thanks, but I ended up building one for ~$55 using some higher quality parts (Cree/MeanWell). Grew chaeto like crazy for a couple of weeks, but has slowed down now that nitrates/phosphates are really low.
