hypertech January 21, 2013 January 21, 2013 I have an extra Madison M8000 float switch and I'm thinking about putting it about 3/4 the way down in my top off container to trigger an email alarm when the reservoir is low so I know to go refill it. It looks to be filled with epoxy or something - anyone run one of these or another switch fully submersed?
Coral Hind January 21, 2013 January 21, 2013 I ran one as a low sump alarm. The first one failed because I think water got inside it where the wires/epoxy are. The second one I slide tubing over the wires and down over the threads. I used 3M Marine Adhesive 5200 to secure the tubing to the threads and sealed out the water. This kept it dry where the wires go into the unit and also kept my wire connection for the extension I had to add dry. Instead of tubing you could also screw the float into a female adapter with teflon and glue pvc pipe on the adapter. Just another way to keep the wires dry and it might be easier to mount.
OldReefer January 21, 2013 January 21, 2013 I run one just like that in my top-off container for 3 years with no problem. I have also run one in my sump as a low sump alarm and that has failed after about 2 1/2 years. (BTW an intermittent false low sump alarm will make you crazy).
hypertech January 21, 2013 Author January 21, 2013 Thanks for the advise. I like the pipe idea - that would make mounting easier. I'll also be sure to write the program so it has to be asserted for a while before tripping. Hopefully it being in fresh water instead of salt will help it last a little longer. Its too bad the pressure switch avast sells does not have an adjustable treshold. That would be the easy solution.
