so a few days ago i bought a smaller one and i guess its doing okay, but all of its tenticals arent really spread all the way out. do you guys know if this is normal for them when theyre just like getting settled in? also, what all should i feed it, and how often. the guy at my LFS said a gold fish every now and then, and everyother day you should feed it some kind of liquid food, and i have zooplex to feed it. is that okay or what?

NO GOLDFISH!!! (They are high in fat and too large for the anemone to digest easily, long term feeding can be harmful to the anemone)

As a general rule stick to the rule of only adding marine based foods to your tank. It will do fine with mysis, other marine fish (like from the seafood counter at the grocery), squid, or other marine based proteins. A good source of this type of food is the frozen prepared foods at the lfs. Stay away from brine srhimp as they have little nutritional value unless spiked with vitamin supplements. Also the anemone will capture detrius from other inhabitants and food from normal tank feedings. You should only have to target feed 1 to 2 times per week, unless you see it capturing food during normal feedings. Then you may cut it back to 1 target feed/week. Also anemones get food from the symbiotic zooxanthellae that they host within their tissues (like corals, but a slightly different mechanism).

Note: this info is based on my research, I just got my first anemone (S. Haddonni) within the last week, but I did copious ammounts of research before the purchase. A very good reference site is wetwebmedia.com.

Small and most available anemones is not a healthy combination.

First skip the goldfish, waste of resources, and frequently regurgitated within hours.

Second skip the liquid food, anemones are equiped with a bunch of stingers and expanding mouth for a reason.

Best foods for most is mysis shrimp, properly sized krill, thawed silversides(cut to size), formula VHP, and some of my giants eat good sized cocktail shrimp.

Target feed no more then every other day and expect it to catch some of what you feed the fish in the tank, which is fine.

Most anemones will "settle" in within 48 hours as long as they were acclimated slowly, removed from the source tank carefully, and are not suffering from poor water conditions, etc.

Good luck.

PS: post a picture and lets find out what kind of anemone it actually is :>)

you get the RO setup? what are your water prams on that tank now. i know you were have alot of problems with that. IF they are off the anemone will not do well. whats you lighting?

ughh. i read or herd that anemones arent good with high nitrates and i have pretty high nitrates. my step brother just took his tank down and there was a little bit of LR and i took it, and the cat knocked a bunch of food into his tank so im not sure if the rock is curing or what, so i only put in a little bit of it for now. i have the coralife 48" 4x65watters. my zoos looked like they were "singed" form nitrite and amonia spikes a while ago, and now the little tassel things are growing back. my xenia are doing great, and it looks like the feather duster is too. but whenever i wake up in the morning the anemone is all scrunched up and i get woried that it might be dieing, and my lights turn on around when i come home from school and it is still a little scrunched up, but within like an hour it is mostly back to normal size. i will post some pictures later tonight.
