Hi, I just got a H. erectus yesterday and was wondering if anyone had any advice on flow rate and if a Maxi-Jet 900 is too strong for a Biocube?

As long as there are areas of lower velocity flow, it is fine. Just don't put hitches directly in front of the output nozzle and make sure you use the input strainer.
