Greetings Fish Friends!

 

Hurricane Irene is right around the corner. Make sure your tanks are prepared for possible power outages. If you don't have a generator, pick up some battery operated air pumps either here or at a sporting goods store (in fishing area for keeping live bait). Make sure you have extra batteries available for long term power outages. Keep some bags of ice in the freezer in case the aquarium temp gets too warm you can float them to help slowly cool your tank. Bring in any empty water containers and pick fill up with some of our pre-mixed salt water and fresh water for emergency water changes. If you have a generator make sure you have plenty of gas available and some extra long extension cords. We hope that everyone fairs well through this storm, please call us if you have any questions.

I did an extensive walk around the store and I am shocked to still see so many beautiful coral colonies still here! We have a huge selection of corals so if you are fairly new to keeping corals, we can work with you and help you in your next coral purchase. If you have been keeping corals for a while, we can also help get you to try out a different type of coral that you don't already have. Sometimes it is hard to picture what a coral might look like in a more natural environment other than on coral racks so don't hesitate to ask us for help or our opinions. A couple I'd like to mention specifically is the Pink Streaked Wrasse and the White Banded Possum Wrasse. These little guys are perfect for nano-tanks and are quite peaceful compared to their cousin the Six Line Wrasse. Did You Know?

 

Did you know that shrimp gobies have a symbiotic relationship with the pistol shrimp? Although the pistol shrimp has poor eyesight he is a great digger, so the shrimp will dig a burrow in the substrate while the goby keeps his eyes peeled for predators. When a threat comes near the pistol shrimp is ready with his antenna touching the goby's tail fin, with one flick of the goby's tail, both the goby and the shrimp dive deep into their tunnel for safety. The goby also does the hunting for the couple bringing food back to the burrow. If you are interested in a pair for your small or large tank, we have a few shrimp and goby pairs available. There are a couple Yellow Watchman Gobies paired with Tiger Pistols as well as a Randall's Goby with a Tiger Pistol. Goby and pistol pairs are also a great addition to the lower portion of your tank and are great at sand sifting.
