collegeman February 14, 2011 February 14, 2011 (edited) Hello, I recently downgraded my 55-gallon reef to a 28-gallon nano cube. I decided to go smaller so I do not spend too much time caring for the tank. Once I finish college next year and get my own home, I will go much bigger. I plan to have a 300-gallon tank with triggers, tangs, rabbit fish and an eel. The total process took 4 hours of hard work. Here are some pics of the results. Let me know what you think. The tank looks much better in person, I used my Samsung captivate phone to take pictures. The polyps of the coral are not completely extended in the pictures. The pictures are under the 108 CF bulb that came with the tank. I will have a new light by this time next week. The only thing i plan to add are some fans, 150 watt MH light, skimmer(maybe), and a bleeding apple scoly or another type. Edited February 14, 2011 by collegeman
BowieReefer84 February 15, 2011 February 15, 2011 Why do you plan to add a metal halide? Looks like you have soft coral and LPS. The power compacts should be just fine. There will be a lot of heat generated from a metal halide.... Tank looks nice.
collegeman February 15, 2011 Author February 15, 2011 I figured the pc was not enough since everything was doing great in my 55 with a nova extreme pro. I also have one clam in the tank, i am thinking about selling the clam if i do not upgrade the light. What do you think?
BowieReefer84 February 15, 2011 February 15, 2011 I am no expert. Just do some research on the heat that a metal halide will generate in an all-in-one tank. The clam won't last long term with the PC's I do not think. You could do LED's, not trying to be preachy. The halide would be nice no question, but be prepared for temps to get up there. I do not think you would want to get a chiller. You could even leave the standard PC's and supplement with some of these http://www.ecoxotic.com/products/modular-led-lighting/stunner-led-strips.html into the hood. They would provide a little shimmer, and some extra light. What do you have in there for flow other than the stock return pump?
collegeman February 15, 2011 Author February 15, 2011 i do not have the stock pumps, the tank came with 2 maxi jets 1200.
collegeman February 15, 2011 Author February 15, 2011 I also decided to get rid of the clam and replace it with either an open brain coral or scoly. I also plans to install 2 fan where the feeding door is to pull the hot air out. Or should i place them the other way to push cool air in? Let me know what you think.

There should already be two fans in the hood. Are they missing? You should have one blowing in, and the other blowing out. This circulates the heat out...
collegeman February 15, 2011 Author February 15, 2011 the fans are not missing. I just thought i should install some to help keep the temp down in the summer.
LanglandJoshua February 15, 2011 February 15, 2011 (edited) it looks great! Edited February 15, 2011 by LanglandJoshua

Laurie February 16, 2011 February 16, 2011 It looks really nice. I do all softies and LPS and they love T5 and VHO lighting. Not nearly the heat problem that you would get with MH.
