75 gallon.

I hate my rock structure

I'm going to pull all the rock out, disgard a few, add a few, complete restructure.  I will be disturbing the DSB more than I'd like to but can't get around that.

I plan on setting up a holding tank to put most of the livestock in.  I'll also have a HD trashcan to hold like 20 gallons while I work.

How long can live-rock be exposed to air before it has significant die-off?

Your experiences, advice, cautions... would be appreciated.

The rock has to stay damp.  Mostly because of the coraline.  I would not go more than 10 minutes.  It only takes minutes for sponges to start the dieing process.

As long as you put the rock in a can with old water and have a means of circulating, it can go indefinately.

On the other hand, putting it on your roof while you are restructuring might cause dismay.

So let me see if I got this right...

In a container with tank water and good circulation = good

On the roof = bad   :p

OK got it smarta$$

Depends on the type of rock too :) If it does have lots of sponges, then keep it pretty wet or submersed. On an average install using Kaelini and Tonga Red Branch rock we cure for 3 weeks+, we pack the rock for transport covered in wet paper towels and it can usually go about 3-4 hours before coralline starts to die off. If you plan to be longer, just grab yourself a few sterlite containers from Target or Home Depot to keep pieces submerged (also helps to pick the perfect rock when building the structure). Not sure how many lbs. you are dealing with, but might want to have some cable ties and long nylon screws and drill bits handy :)

As I sit here looking at the screen and a 7-8 year old flame angel eating an acro frag in my home "pet" tank, this all reminds me I too have to redo the rock structure after catching the two dwarf angels from the tank will require moving the rock! grrr. Makes me want to keep the tank SPS free, but then I would have to set up another sps tank if I don't get em out! "Honey, can I put a tank in your office?" hehe. Wanna help me when you are done with yours? :)

JK, I know you won't want to see another piece of rock after redoing yours! Have fun though!
