michaelg July 26, 2004 Share July 26, 2004 I came across this today. It is a useful definition of sustainable use, and made me pause to ponder the reefs and all that impacts on it. Note in this definition 2 key factors- the item being used (collected) and habitat needed to sustain the wild population. "Sustainable use is the concept that resources should be used in way that there is a balance between resource production and human consumption such that harvesting will not reduce future production and options for resource use. Sustainable management therefore requires a shift in focus from short- to long-term use and profits, and places importance on sustaining species with potential future uses. It is also closely aligned with ecosystem management concept where resource use is expected to maintain the many ecological processes and diversity of the utilized ecosystem while managing for multiple present and future needs of people."
