I am really impressed with my Octopus. I was using a needle wheel and just switched to the pin wheel. It improved the performance. Dont know much about GSA.

I had a needle wheel ASM and Dan's upgrade is far superior. I don't know anything about the octopus skimmers, but Dan put's a lot of thought into his designs and you have the benefit of having him available if you need him.

I currently use the SWC300 which is the same thing as the MSX300. You can get it HERE for $399. I think it is a great deal for a beast of a skimmer with 2 sicce 2500 pumps.

I don't recommend the mesh mod. They don't last long and if not properly balanced they will make your pump very noisy. Some people reported breaking parts inside from the imbalance. With the 2 pumps and the original pin wheels you get great performance:

You will also need to change the air tubing as the one that comes with the skimmer kinks easily restricting air flow. I bought black vinyl tubing from HD and it works great.

These skimmers are Ozone safe too.

This skimmer is HUGE. So if space is an issue consider the cone.

Watson you are welcome to come over to take a look at it.

Also head over to RC and there is a whole thread dedicated to these skimmers. You can see the pros and cons from the multiple different opinions.

I opened a thread about skimmers some time ago and also did a review of the SWC in that same thread, when I received it. You can see it HERE.

Yeah, that Reeflo 250 is a monster and for the total volume you will have it would be a great fit with plenty to spare.

You can check the MSX thread on RC. A lot of people use them and they are very good skimmers for the money.

I think the GSA cone looks like a great skimmer but it might not be sufficient for your system, we are talking 350g. Same goes for all the cones currently available. The MSX300 can handle up to 600gal avg load, but that is overrated IMO, its rated for 300 gal heavy bio load. So probably you will be using it at close to max capacity in your system. Plus we all end up adding a few more tanks, like a frag tank or a refugium and then you will be definitely passing its max capability. If you can go external on the skimmer and can get a good deal from James I would definitely go with the Reeflo.

Debating on which of these to get, anyone with any experience with the OE 300 or past experience with GSA equip?

What do you guys think???

It will be for mixed reef, avg load, 250G display; 100G of water in sump.

I had an Octopus NW150 on my 75g tank, and now have an Octopus NW200 on my 135g tank. So, needless to say, I am a big fan of the Octopus Skimmers. I will most likely be getting another when I upgrade tanks again. I am sure the Reef Octopus Extreme 300 is a beast.
