michaelg October 24, 2002 October 24, 2002 My bangaii pair now have eggs!!!! Last night the males mouth was FULL, and he wasn't eating. Will keep you guys updated. Time to read up on rearing the babies. I should have everything I need at this point, for bangers. Michael
Larry Grenier October 24, 2002 October 24, 2002 Great news! Keep us post and describe your feeding practice. I read where a guy was feed his prawn eggs successfully rather than live food. Have you ever tried non-live food with baby bangers?
Guest cbo October 24, 2002 October 24, 2002 So how is your wife taking the news. Is she excited about the notes you are no doubt writing for her to perform daily while you are out of town. HA HA. No, seriously, that is great news hope things turn out well. I second larry's comment, let us know how things go. cbo
michaelg October 24, 2002 Author October 24, 2002 This will be the first batch. The eggs were dropped yesterday, so they shouldn't hatch until after I return, if memory serves correctly there don't come out for 3 weeks???. Bangaiis don't come out as larval fish from what I recall, whereas the clown eggs have been hatching 8 days after they are laid.. I saw the fish roe stuff over on RC, but have not found a local source for it. I plan to raise the little ones in the refugium and feed with rotifer sized golden pearls and artemia naupauli to start. I'm sure it will be a learning process, and will naturally share my experiences with the group. Not sure the best way to catch them. Getting the male before hand is next to impossible with out busting up a bunch of coral along the way. Michael
pez October 24, 2002 October 24, 2002 Good news Michael. Maybe mine will be do the same some time soon. Will the babies actually eat golden pearls? I thought they wanted live food. -T
michaelg October 24, 2002 Author October 24, 2002 I don't know. I'm going to try and mix it. Knowing them I'm sure they will want live food only. If I can keep them in the refugium then there is a lot of natural food in there, and mechanisms to deal with uneaten food. Will see. Oliver seemed to have good luck using the refugium method. Michael
pez October 24, 2002 October 24, 2002 If you have success, you should write something up that we can post on the web site. Oh, take pictures too! -T
KABALA October 25, 2002 October 25, 2002 Hope you do excellent, I think you should do great with the rotifers on as far as food. Hopefully when mature you might spare 1 or 2 to a fellow member :D Mike
Guest Scott324 October 25, 2002 October 25, 2002 I did a lot of research on RC about Bangaiis when I had my breeding setup. I beleive the male holds the eggs anywhere between 20-30 days. There were no reports, that i remember, of them eating dead foods other than Prawn eggs. I beleive exotic aquatics in Balt sell them. Also remember to seperate the male and female after he releases. I believe there was a higher success rate when the male had time to fatten up before breeding again. After release of the eggs, the female give the male eggs relatively quickly. I believe there was also a problem with feeding only brine. Something about the liver, but I am a little hazy about that. So you may want to try and supplement something else. Frank Marini has lots of info as well as the breeders registry.
pez October 25, 2002 October 25, 2002 I suspect any fish would have problems with eating only one source of food. In any case, brine shrimp should be "fattened" up with selcon and/or vitamins prior to feeding any way. Here's the bangaii article by Frank. http://www.breeders-registry.gen.ca.us/Article....ini.htm -Tom
geofloors October 25, 2002 October 25, 2002 I'm pretty sure Oliver raised his babies on frozen baby brine shrimp until they were large enough to eat frozen mysis. I think I'll put my male and female together to see what happens. George
pez October 26, 2002 October 26, 2002 I have a pair from oliver, as does michael. if he comes to the next meeting maybe we can have a sidebar about it. The winter (Jan/03) meeting will likely be on breeding, so that will be a good opportunity to talk again. -Tom
