Highland Reefer January 11, 2009 Share January 11, 2009 IMHO the Hach PO-19 & the D&D Merck are the two most accurate phosphate test kits for under $100.00. I think you could get by with the Salifert Kits though at less than half the price.

onux20 January 12, 2009 Share January 12, 2009 How easy/hard is it to distinguish the color change? Overall, how easy is the test kit? The test has you compare the test sample against another sample of your tank water. The color change from light blue to indistinguishable from the other sample is pretty easy to do..with a white background. Four different chemicals, three syringes...still pretty easy. I like it better than the other Ca test kit I have used. HTH Ron

Vader January 12, 2009 Share January 12, 2009 I did a phosphate test with a Merck and the readings were .05ppm and the Salifert test showed 0 from the same water sample.

Both kits have an error range of +or- 0.03 at the lower range, so they are both possibly within range. I would trust the Merck more. Once the phosphate levels are down below 0.03 microalgae growth is the best indicator.
