Did you know that a protein skimmer can help you maintain water quality? Unlike a mechanical filter, a skimmer removes proteins and other contaminants from the water column before they have a chance to break down into more harmful elements such as ammonia and nitrite. Protein skimmers are designed to fit directly in your sump or to hang on the back of your aquarium so it is easy to choose the best type and size skimmer for your system. Don't forget that a new protein skimmer requires a break-in period of about 1-2 weeks before it reaches optimum performance. During this time you will need to make adjustments to optimize the air-water mix. Changes in performance are caused by the water level of your sump or aquarium, feeding, use of supplements, salinity, and the bio-load. Regular cleaning of collection cup, intakes, air tubes and inside shaft is also required to help keep your skimmer running properly. Do you have a protein skimmer and is it running properly?
