civitan.erichanson June 30, 2008 June 30, 2008 Last night I noticed a stream of water running from the bottom of my tank to the floor. After the heart attack was over I realized that the flow off the top of my foam filter used on the outflow of my ASM G-1 had somehow "increased" and SW was running over the side of the sump. Okay - quickly fixed although probaly 3-5 gallons on the carpet. Question is, should these foam filters be cleaned regularly and if so, how often and in what? Can I rinse it in FW or do I need to wring it out in SW? The change in flow is really noisy now.
davelin315 June 30, 2008 June 30, 2008 Hey Eric, I would actually replumb it by adding a T with a riser up and then a 90 elbow off the side of the T to lead the water back down to the sump. This will reduce the noise and the splashing. You may also want to consider a gate valve on there to monitor the water flow better than the slide that the ASM skimmers use. As far as the foam, the only purpose it serves is to cut back on micro bubbles and reduce the splashing so you can rinse it out in whatever you want.
civitan.erichanson July 3, 2008 Author July 3, 2008 Does anyone have a manual for this thing if so can you scan it and shoot it to me? That would be ideal, but in the interim can anyone tell me how to adjust the overflow tube? Also, I think it is an ASM G-1x. Thanks, Eric.

Far as I know, there really isn't a manual per say, as it pretty much just comes with a parts list. [at least that's what I got with mine, and searching gave the same results.] If you have questions, just ask, and I'm sure one of the guru's of WAMAS can help answer about anything. Lot's of us use the ASM's from what I gather.

The change in flow is really noisy now. I took the sponge off mine and put a PVC elbow on the top of the stand pipe. This works to direct the flow back into your sump and in my case, it trickles down the inside wall of the sump which reduces the noise. I'd like to implement the gate valve and recirculating mods, but I'm seriously considering taking down my 55 and selling everything off. This thread has good mods for ASMs. http://www.wamas.org/forums/index.php?show...c=22957&hl=

I am challenged, is the adjustable tube the same tube that the foam tube is on? My skim mate foam is at the bottom of the cup, I never see it foamed up in the neck of the cup, yet I get black/green yucky collection and seaweed green coating inside my cup neck. So it must be skimming something I suspect its not optimized.

It goes right back in though. A little twisting action might help to loosen the grunge on the friction neck. Sounds like you are "dry skimming". It's ok, just doesn't produce like "wet skimming" will. I think the difference is the amount of liquid in your cup. Also, once I put the PVC elbow on mine, the foam went up to about 1-1/2" from the top of the neck in the cup. Seems to be a good place for it. Takes about a week to fill up the cup. I highly rec the gate valve mod and to get rid of the adjustable tube (ie. just push it all the way down) as the weight of the gate valve / PVC elbow seem to force the pipe down over time causing the skimmer to fade in skimmate production.
