Coral Hind June 12, 2008 June 12, 2008 I have read a few articles lately about a ZEOvit style of keeping reef tanks. I was wondering if anyone in the club had any experience to share on the ZEOvit reactor.
tonkadawg June 12, 2008 June 12, 2008 I used zeo for a little while on my 18g nano. I definitely believe that it works, but it just may not be the right way for everyone. what questions did you have about the zeo reactor?
Coral Hind June 12, 2008 Author June 12, 2008 what questions did you have about the zeo reactor? It looks like it requires a lot more time to maintain. Is that true? Are the benefits worth the extra $ and time?
tonkadawg June 12, 2008 June 12, 2008 it does require a more dedicated and committed maintenance schedule. This is the main reason why I stopped using it - that and it's just so hard to get all the dosing quantities, flow and stuff correct for a small, sumpless tank. You have the basic 4 - Zeobak, Zeofood, and Zeostart - all which need to be dosed daily if not 2x. Then you have the Zeolites which are the rocks in the reactor. The amount of flow through your reactor depends on your tank size, and it is recommended that you cycle it off every 3 hrs, but be sure to not let the zeolites get exposed to air - always keep them submurged in water. The system also relies on the use of quality carbon and heavy skimming. Again, my experience was good, but it was just really hard given my schedule, tank size and everything. I do think that if you have a larger tank (> 100 gallons), the required maintenance would be a lot easier. oh yeah, you can easily make a zeo reactor - no need to buy those $$$ stuff I've seen. Also remember no kalk when using zeo as it's counter productive. www.zeovit.com is a great site, lots of info and a lot of knowledgeable people - look for Aged Salt, GAlexander, invincible569, gqjeff - all great guys who use and understand how the system works.
Coral Hind June 12, 2008 Author June 12, 2008 Thanks for the info. The last thing I want is to make more work for myself, so this is already sounding like a method I don't want to try.

My experience may not even apply to you. If/when I get a larger tank (think 200-500 gallons) I will probably look at zeo again.
jwildman June 12, 2008 June 12, 2008 I was using it for a while. Got to be too much work and cost. I saw some good results. But to be honest I have seen better results from Kalk and CA reactor and keeping better tabs on my water quality. Not slamming Zeo ... just not right for me. John I think that John Wildman is using the Zeovit system.
