I have read that Dow flake lot numbers starting with "U" were made in 2006 and should not have a bromide problem. My problem is that it is very difficult to read my lot number.

Here is a link on how to decode a Dow lot number:

Can anyone look at thier bag and tell me if there is a colon used after the word "Lot"

If so I think my bag reads Lot: UC10????

That would be good news for me for a good long time as I only use about 1 cup a month and I have a full 50lb bag.

Thanks for any help.

Bruce

Here are some pictures of my lot number using various angles and lighting:

I saw this on RC chemistry forum:

"I just found this, which says DowFlake 77-80%, what we use, is being replaced by DowFlake Xtra 83-87%.

http://news.dow.com/prodbus/2006/20060717c.htm

What I get out of this is any DowFlake is good. All the new stuff made in 07 is the DowFlake Xtra.

Makes sense because I got the last bag of DowFlake at the supply store and all the new pallets were Xtra."

from bottom of page 1 of this thread

I got my Dowflake at Harvey Salt Co (actually got the tip to use them from your earlier post, Bruce). I talked to a guy named Mike who told me this:

"To answer your questions we will sell as little as one bag of calcium and magnesium. The Dow Flake we have is the old Dow Flake which we purchased for our salt water aquarium customers."

So I gather as long as it's not the "Xtra" brand, you should be okay, especially if you bought it from Harvey Salt co.
