tonkadawg April 22, 2008 April 22, 2008 I'm building a stand and canopy and need some help with welding up a mounting bracket to hang the canopy from the stand. I've got a basic idea of what I'm looking for and will have completed drawings - measurements included. The one thing I lack is a welder and the experience. If you'd like to help me out, I'm willing to pay for your time (I'll even bring the beer if you let me help/learn). Also, I'll be in need of powder-coating so if anyone knows where that can be done, I'd appreciate it.
yauger April 22, 2008 April 22, 2008 you know how well my DIY skills are so welding is out of the question for me... but you can go here http://www.dominionpowdercoating.com/ for powder coating you new stand....

I'll stick to letting you smoke the cigars (picked up a few this weekend btw) LOL - I'll check out dominion powder coating when I get it all welded up - thanks for the link! looks like they also do light fab work - so worst case, if I can't find anyone else, I can have them weld up the bracket for me. I was just hoping to find a member who might be willing to teach me the basics.

It might be a 8 week class so it wont be that much of a burden to your current schedule... maybe I should check it out seems like theres a big interest in metal stands....
tonkadawg April 22, 2008 Author April 22, 2008 yeah I was planning on getting into some of those courses when I get my hotrod. But with baby on the way and other things going on, those types of things are on the back burner. BUT, one day I'll get there.

BTW I had a friend who went to Dominion Powder Coating to build a stand and coat it for him and I think he spend $300 total... not bad for price but then again this was a couple of years ago...
tonkadawg April 22, 2008 Author April 22, 2008 yeah the dream is a 35-47 Chevy pick up... anyways, back to the topic at hand - if you weld and have some spare time, I'd appreciate any help you can lend.
HowardofNOVA April 22, 2008 April 22, 2008 Matt seriously WELDING?? How big is this canopy?? I'm a Certified Welder, but I would look at something alot less weight then what your looking at, like sheet metal or better yet wood, won't rust? Real curious to see your diagram of what your trying to do???
tonkadawg April 22, 2008 Author April 22, 2008 (edited) rough estimate on the canopy measurements are 20" wide x 15" deep and 12" high. I'm thinking this bracket will consist of 1" square about 24" long (two runs for balance), then there'll be a 90* and maybe 10" run off of that. kinda like this: (side) __________<-- attaches to canopy here | / |/ | | | | <- attaches to stand here (not to scale of course ) What I'm really thinking is that the stand will have some sqaure tubing that this 'bracket' will slide into (allowing me to raise and lower the canopy/lights as needed) and then on top or inside the canopy more square tubing that will allow the other end of hte bracket to slide into (thus allowing me to slide the canopy in or out). shawns April 22, 2008 April 22, 2008 dude, i dont know anything about welding, but let me tell you what... if there is beer involved, i would give it a shot. even if i know NOTHING! beer is like butter, they each can make anything better!

tonkadawg April 22, 2008 Author April 22, 2008 guys remember, my goal here is to make it presentable - if not the wife won't let it in the house. Josh, I didn't come and watch the drywall/mud/sanding of your basement did I?
OrientBlueReef April 22, 2008 April 22, 2008 I used to weld a decent amount when I did bodywork. I don't have access to a welder now, though. For your application it shouldn't be too hard to find somebody capable of doing the work...pretty much any kind of welding should work for this.
tonkadawg April 23, 2008 Author April 23, 2008 Josh, I didn't come and watch the drywall/mud/sanding of your basement did I? my apologies to Josh - I just re-read this and while trying to be funny, it's not :(
HowardofNOVA April 23, 2008 April 23, 2008 Matt If your canopy is only 20" wide x 15" deep and 12" high, considering welding for something this small would be a huge over kill? If all you want is to move it out of the way, I would recommend 1x2 board frame and 1/4 plywood covering for ease of getting in and out. Somewhere I believe I'm not getting what your trying to do???
tonkadawg April 23, 2008 Author April 23, 2008 yeah in terms of weight, it's definitely overkill. In my mind, what I'm gaining by using metal - square pipe - is the ability to adjust the height and position over the tank. Not to mention a clean look. What I'm thinking is there'll be some 1" ID sqaure pipe attached to the stand, then the bracket, which would be 1" OD that would slide into piece attached to the stand. That will give me the vertical adjustment. Then same thing for the canopy which gives me the horizontal adjustment. If I use wood to make this bracket, I lose the ability to adjust the canopy position - unless I'm not seeing all the possibilities ?
yauger April 23, 2008 April 23, 2008 my apologies to Josh - I just re-read this and while trying to be funny, it's not :( no it was funny, you should have seen me covered head to toe in dry wall dust... and to think I told the wife we shouldn't cover the furniture... hahahahaha

tonkadawg June 8, 2008 Author June 8, 2008 I'm still looking for anyone that can help with this. This is the last piece I need made before I can move my tank - and I need that done before the baby comes! Here's some basic drawings and measurements: if you know of anyone who can help out, please let me know! And of course, I'm willing to pay for time and materials.
yauger June 9, 2008 June 9, 2008 Howard where are you on this? I think you may be the only certified welder in the club...
